It's kinda funny how every third political post on has some variation of "oh so you think there's going to be elections how cute" in the replies while the daily news is of Republicans getting boatraced in elections, manufacturing the reality you desire to be outraged about isn't just a rw phenomenon

"Become the worst possible version of yourself and you will finally become a big shot" is the central promise of the Trump Era, and resisting that temptation is the central political struggle. I don't care what nominal politics someone holds if they're constantly falling to the call of The Beast

A lot of people criticizing 2 party systems implicitly or explicitly promise the former which isn’t great

2 party systems are bad but it’s not great that people think that a multiparty system would be “there will be a boutique party that agrees with you on most issues” rather than “coalition management becomes more explicit between a left and right wing coalition”

and the root error is always positing some kind of totally autonomous — if not autarkic — hermetically sealed personality that acts as a sort of perpetual motion machine. never needing any external power source, complete without any dependencies, isolated from environment
It’s really pretty strange how many people seem to believe that things that are good in life and quality of life very broadly conceived are or ought to be entirely irrelevant to your happiness and enjoyment of life.
could the “you should be able to be happy living anywhere, and if you’re not able to do that, it’s a skill issue” contingent tell that to my winter seasonal depression, please?

because MAN would that simplify my life if the cure, which I somehow never thought of before, was that easy

these are all wrong, its crazy
You see this with like “you should be able to live anywhere” and the recurring advice that “if you aren’t happy being alone you won’t be happy with a partner” and stuff like that. It’s pretty odd.

right after my father died several of his contemporaries invited me to come speak at their churches ... they knew i was in college and wanted to help me out

Went down a hole tonight and confirmed it in the original texts in Hebrew and Greek: the bird that was carrying an olive branch to Noah, and symbolized the Spirit of God descending on Jesus…that was a pigeon, gang. Pigeons and doves are the same thing anyways, but all the translations are snobbery.

One of the most off-putting things about this site in particular is the prominent attitude that its rude to have good news or be happy about something if someone somewhere else doesnt/isnt
I think it’s okay for people to post about their lives actually. If something good happens to me, I’m probably gonna post about it. I don’t think that’s cruel

Once someone approaches history from that perspective, exactly which qualities they assign to which groups becomes kind of irrelevant

There's a certain kind of history enthusiast who considers it the point of history to assign moral qualities to specific groups rather than to learn, understand, and interpret.

I think it’s kind of sad that people treat Christmas as a one day holiday and not a twelve day one. My family did the second and it’s way better.

You have to be as legendary as Beyonce, Madonna, or Elvis *and* not democratically accountable as a person with real power in order for a public first-name-basis situation to be okay.

Parasocial relationships are always bad, but especially bad with politicians.

If your hypothetical secular charity group is ready and prepared to start running an emergency shelter then they should go ahead and open it up because there is no shortage of people in need.

Every time someone tells me that if the church-run emergency homeless shelters in my county shut down it would be fine because a secular organization would step up to take their place it makes me want to tear my hair out. We have a shortage of shelter beds and people sleep outside every night.

I want 2026 to be the year where we collectively stop rewarding negativity. Stop bringing others down to bring yourself up. Stop bringing attention to genuinely awful people. Stop ignoring people bringing positive changes to the world. We need more kindness and empathy. I’m dead serious
