But as a teenager, it was like a knife through the heart. Not only did she DISCOVER MY SECRET she bought me a whole make-up kit, like I was some sort of FREAK who needed it. I broke down in tears, sprinted to the side of the house and threw it in the dumpster before locking myself in my room all day

Now as an adult I am aware that this was actually a very sweet gesture of support and it breaks my heart that our relationship fell apart for MANY other reasons and we had the mess we had because she was far more understanding about this shit than anyone else in my family and it could have helped

I was, predictably, terrible at it and only did it when I knew she was out, but it helped me try things and was a secret I held close to my chest

She, of course, found out. And one day I came home to find a whole nice little make up kit sitting on my bed waiting for me. No note. No nothing.

Thinking about the early closeted days as a teenager and a memory I hadn't thought about for ages popped in my head.

As a teen I was DEEP in the Experimentation->Shame->Repression->Repeat cycle that lasted until I came out at 28 and one way I experimented was sneaking make up from my stepmother

I'm reminded of when Eisenhower was President, he utterly refused to allow military men to salute him because he understood the importance of civilian control of the military, and while as a 5 star he was technically ALWAYS in the Army, as President he was a civilian.
