Tardy #QOTD for May 27, 2023, is from #SummerMeditations by #VaclavHavel. The US needs a leader like Havel, a playwright and peaceful dissident during communism, then a reluctant first President of post communism Czechoslovakia. Not a complete turd like #Trump.

It's an old and obvious pattern. An unpopular president - failing on the economy and losing his grip on power at home - decides to launch a war for regime change abroad.

The American people don’t want to “run” a foreign country while our leaders fail to improve life in this one.

Whenever we're out of this shit the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau should be built into an absolutely nightmare bureaucratic goliath. Increase the original funding by a million times and hire thousands of staffers trying to fuck shit up for business.

This is my favorite sentence in a long while. From Doug Varone, whose dance company lost $40,000 by canceling two Kennedy Center gigs planned for next April:

“It is financially devastating but morally exhilarating.”

Millions of Americans remain at jobs they hate for one reason: the health insurance they receive. That’s absurd.

Universal health care will give Americans the freedom to choose the work they want without worrying about health care coverage.

Another reason for Medicare for All.

A nice thread in which an actual expert patiently explains why the Secretary of Health and Human Service is not simply a liar, but an especially stupid one.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has stated that the 1918 flu pandemic was caused by a lab virus from vaccine research, a defective influenza vaccine. Let’s analyze what a lie this is. First, in 1918, 107 years ago, virology was in its infancy

This is profoundly un-American.

No—that's not right.

It's *anti*-American.

It's hatred of the United States and its founding documents and all its people and all its traditions.

The person who wrote and approved this is a weirdo who detests everything that America stands for.

Everyday I feel more and more European.
We condemn the scandalous US visa ban on former EU Commisioner Breton and digital activists. Protecting democracy isn’t censorship. ✋🏼

Disinformation isn’t free speech. Europe won’t take lessons from those undermining democracy and free speech.

Here in Europe we set our own laws. 🇪🇺✊🏼

There is the term #MurderByPublicPolicy. Republicans have always been very good at it, but this administration of the unevolved continues to prove they are the worst humanity has to offer.
It is utterly catastrophic that RFK Jr. plans to end CDC recommendations for most childhood vaccines.

It’s a betrayal of science, ethics, compassion, and the people of the United States.

And it was also a specific goal of Project 2025 (page 254).

That is the problem with many private charities in the USA, isn't it? They're quite often run by religious outfits with ties to conservative, right wing groups that actively create the problems the charities are ostensibly trying to fix in some sort of weird, symbiotic relationship.

This should be the biggest story in the country right now. The sitting US President was extorting state lawmakers from his own party by threatening to withhold public money if they didn’t gerrymander for him.

I don’t know how else to say it…
