As many of us begin Christmas meal prep, allow me to share the advice that my ER nurse sister puts in the chat every year:

IN VALEN'S NAME, USE ALT TEXT FOR YOUR IMAGES.

You want to prove you're down for progressive causes? Do the most basic fucking thing ever and use alt-text. Also, use it to describe the image and provide context so that the people who rely on alt-text can experience your image as intended.

Managed to point a telescope at the Sun, during a quieter moment this morning. Had planned to hitch a camera for a direct photo rather than this projection effort, but the seeing went off soon after. 🔭 1/2

Best way to cook snags (sausages, for the non-Australians). Brown them, then add a bed of chopped onions (celery: optional) to sit the snags on, and cover. Low-med heat now. 1/2

I’m no expert, but I’ve seen this paper described as an important justification for claims about the safety of Roundup. And now it has been retracted by the journal it appeared in. 🧪

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

I wonder what the timber is. It's probably not the boss of yew.
A wooden ceiling boss from Carlisle Cathedral. Dating to around 1400, the boss can be viewed in the Cathedral’s treasury. 📸 My own. #Woodensday #CarlisleCathedral

Happy Birth Certificate Day to my wife.

Legend has it that the ward Sister liked a sherry, and was a bit hazy on the date. So, like the Queen - sorry, King - she has an official birthday and an actual birthday. So we celebrate both :) 🍹🍹

When I started this Christmas card project in 2022 never did I think it would raise £50,000 for @womensaidni.bsky.social in just a couple of years but with your support that’s what we’ve done to this point. Looking forward to seeing what we add to that this year.

Pre-orders are open… 1/
