- am an unity game dev, trying unreal engine for about a year and half
- making an untitled mech game inspired by ps2 era armored core series mixed with quality-of-life improvement from later installments (planned)
- extremely early stage of development with no art assets at all

I really enjoyed AC6 but the earlier PS2 era ac felt more like I am actually operating some heavy machinery which imo is a bit lacking in AC6... But I really do like the fact that you can fire all weapon at once in AC6. Changing weapon each time to use was quite annoying to me.

What if Armored Core was a twin-stick shooter? Would it still work? What makes Armored Core fun?

the first rule of player feedback is that players are not game designers. you are the fucking game designer. players don't know the first thing about game design nor do they know what they actually want until you do the work and give it to them. if we listened to players everything would be fortnite
I once worked on a visual novel game where all the surveys and focus groups said that nobody wanted romance, they only wanted mystery and sci-fi.

Then 75+% of clicks in-game went to stories with explicit romantic or sexy themes.

'These kids do not care about romance': Game devs want to know what today's teens want, and surveys say sex and romance isn't it
Young people want stories about friendship more than romance, say researchers and industry execs.

It’s extremely sad to lose one of the rare names and faces whose impact is marked within game dev art. Most of the time people use the shorthand of the game title but can rarely able to point to the individuals who influence you and the industry.

Godot's shader reference is ok but it's kind of intermixed with tutorials, code & notes. I was constantly scrolling up/down and found it a bit uncomfy. So I made an interactive reference with some combiners and filters to only show what you need...

Anybody positing that the problem with the games industry is that devs are too expensive is gonna get an instant block. For the cost of one EA CEO you could afford 213 devs making $120k apiece.

Read the room, my dudes; a LOT of very skilled people are out of work right now. Profits are trickling up

don't underestimate your subconscious need for a wide range of experiences

if you spend weeks doing the same thing in the same environment in the same way, you're at risk of forgetting the broader world of life, art, and people. it can get really isolating, and exacerbates burnout

Hey, friends.
I know the world is ablaze, and my problems are minor, but I need to take a chance.

I love making music for games. 2023-2024 saw 5 projects I was working on get cancelled, and their studios shut down, and I haven't written a note since June.*
Got any games that need music?
