Time for my hobby horse again: it’s so weird and fucked up that the man exercising the powers of the American presidency has absolutely no knowledge of or attachment to American culture at any level.
Trump: "When you look at football in the US, soccer -- we seem to never call it that, because we have a little bit of a conflict with another thing that's called football. But when you think about it, shouldn't it really be called football? We have to come up with another name for the NFL stuff."

Putin's war in Ukraine shows where authoritarianism can lead: ~1.4 million casualties. An entire generation sacrificed for one man's imperialist delusions.

We must not let any president drag us into war without congressional approval.

Great point from @mjtoma.bsky.social:The Pete Hegseth scandal actually reveals the entire GOP's "total abdication of constitutional responsibilities." This piece reminds us that "responsible" Rs like Roger Wicker sanctioned his nomination. This was all predictable:

Cowardly Pete Hegseth Is This Week’s Proof of the GOP’s Moral Rot
Of course defense secretary is a disaster. But everyone knew back in January that he would be. That’s where the real problem lies.

Trump has quietly gutted enforcement of the corporate alternative minimum tax — a boon for big corporations.

His Big Ugly Bill, which slashed Medicaid and SNAP, also gave corporations $16B in new depreciation tax breaks this year.

A windfall for the wealthy at your expense.

Five corporations control 90% of the US media market.

Airlines merged from 12 major carriers in 1980 to 4 today.

Four giants control 80% of meat processing.

The evidence of corporate consolidation is everywhere.

It means more power for them and less freedom for you.
Netflix's $83 billion takeover of Warner Bros Discovery would mean more corporate consolidation.

Netflix, by far the #1 streamer, would take over HBO Max, the #3 streaming service.

This giant merger could violate antitrust law and hurt consumers.

Forty years ago, 90% of media outlets were spread across 50 companies.

Now, just 5 companies control 90% of the media market.

This consolidation hurts consumers and helps oligarchs. 🧵

I understand, as well as anyone, why folks are cynical about #SCOTUS. But even from the conservative justices' perspective, the birthright citizenship case is easy. And the Justice Department knows it, too; as I wrote in September, its bevavior in these cases has just been going through the motions:
179. Whither the Birthright Citizenship Cases?
Notwithstanding the Court's June ruling, President Trump's birthright citizenship executive order remains blocked—a broader lesson on the risks of paying attention to only one part of the news cycle.

There’s no such thing as a “free market.”

It is designed.
