This fellowship supported me thru my PhD in Sociology. But it wouldn’t today. “GRFP is one of the most important fellowships for early-career scientists. If it’s now simply another way to carry out the admin’s priorities, that sends a msg to these students that maybe they aren’t welcome in science.”
The National Science Foundation just chose its latest round of prestigious student fellowships:
60%+ in computer science
0 in life sciences (yes, zero)
This govt does not have a human vision for our future.

Based on some quick math, this alone could fund the NSF Plant Genome Research Program for ~4 years; the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology, which was totally axed in the NSF budget request, for ~9 years; and ~ half the total NSF GRFP budget
BREAKING: The Pentagon said the deployment of National Guard members and Marines to protests over immigration raids in LA will cost $134 million.
Hegseth faces sharp questions from Congress on deploying troops to Los Angles and Pentagon chaos
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has been quickly met with sharp questions and criticism by lawmakers who pressed him about his early moves to fire key military leaders and and purge diversity programs.

Wow! RFK spending efficiency is strong! Order for CDC to create a measles “treatment” Vitamin A, sun charged crystals & some lyophilized bear brain should do the trick!
The preventative tool we have is only 97% effective, saving 90 million-can’t be trusted. Excellent way to pivot canceled grant $

This editorial by Professor Alondra Nelson should be read in its entirety, but the part about how DOGE is actively interfering in NSF activities is especially appalling.

Where is the scientific funding tipping point? Daily, more grants are canceled or reduced beyond the capacity to train PhDs. We are all disappointed and angry, but what’s in our power to do? I own a property in KY so my call to Hal Rodgers (majority chair for commerce-science-etc) felt useful. 1/2

Implementation of Schedule F
This is what a lot of us have been worried about.
This allows for many civil service positions to replaced with political appointees. This could include NIH institute directors and even POs.
