This is wonderful news, and also means it’s time for me to beat the drum I always do when HPV vaccines make the news:

They are not only for women! HPV also causes penile, anal, and head and neck cancers. The latter are particularly deadly. Please vaccinate ALL your children.
Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

In case you missed this, the BBC edited a historian's speech about Trump to remove the claim that he's "the most openly corrupt president in US history." This came after Trump had threatened a $1 billion lawsuit.

Elite capitulation continues.

Read all about it here:

Trump Angrily Threatened to Sue BBC. Then Things Took a Darker Turn.
First, British Broadcasting Corporation execs resigned after Trump complained about a segment. Now the BBC edited out a line from a historian that was critical of Trump. Where does this end?

NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Short of a remaster of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, I don't think I've seen a program that I wanted 20 years ago more. I got ambitious and tried to use ArcGIS to do D&D maps/DM info tools. It went poorly.

@mightofmerchants.bsky.social is out there doing nice things.

Ok palate cleanse time. In case you missed it, here's my most popular post ever
4 yrs ago today, a family member managed a truly spectacular own goal, splintered his domestic bliss, & in the process, united the world for a day.

On popular request, I shall now recreate the livetweet thread from that day

Also people who like Star Trek more than Star Wars are wrong. That's just objective fact
anyway, this is obviously a personal preference thing, I'm not saying anyone who connects more with star trek than star wars is wrong

but the little kid in me imprinted on lightsabers and that's that

here's my thing with this:

it's objectively true, there is vastly more good star trek than star wars

but I still like the star wars universe as a sandbox more than star trek
You ever think about just how handily Star Trek has won the Star Wars/Star Trek war? Turns out making a lot of good content is really hard!

Okay. The people have spoken.

For every reskeet this gets, I will post a random picture from my camera roll with no explanation (other than alt text).

Let the games begin.

I'm gonna need you to get it together here, people.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

One of the weekends my father had rehearsal and custody of my brother and me, instead of hanging out in the green room doing homework, I hung out at the lightboard and watched them pan a sun gobo and moon gobo across the cyclorama to indicate the progression of time in the story.
