Our next book: "Making the Modern Laboratory"

An illustrated, coffee table-sized volume, it covers the origins of the machines, organisms and tools used in modern biology research. More importantly, it's a call to imagine the FUTURE of the laboratory.

Come help us write it!

I cannot understand what these people think the purpose of human life is?

It is *not* "pursue joy, deal justly, love well, try to understand as much and see as much of this beautiful world and of the deepness, richness and variety of human culture and experience as you can before you die"?

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

My former team at JAX sent two people to SciPy this year and they teamed up to teach a workshop on scaling-up deep learning inference to large-scale bioimage data - it's finally on youtube! if you need an intro to the dask/zarr world, this is a great starting point. www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCWu...

Here's a gift link to a very approachable article about what makes Tiktok so sticky. It's a little scold-y, but it touches on what's different about Tiktok that keeps users there better than Reels or Youtube Shorts. All things worth considering when building for the ATmosphere!

How TikTok keeps its users scrolling for hours a day
Washington Post reporters analyzed data from over 800 TikTok users to learn how the app turns people into power users, some of whom spend hours per day scrolling.

Johns Hopkins sophomore student Florin Selaru develops a new scheme to deconvolve colors in histological sections for digital pathology.

It greatly outperforms traditional linear color deconvolution.

Congrats Florin!

CW: depression, ideation (& the brain)

Case study: stimulation of the sustantia nigra produces acute, intense depression that dissipates as soon as stimulation stops. Wow.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17561432/

(FYI: In follow-up, the individual had no mood issues 5 yrs out; whew!).
Within a couple of seconds, the patient’s face showed an expression of utmost sorrow and he started to sob and cry violently. He repeated over and over again the words ‘‘everything is so dark’’, ‘‘please doctor I don’t want to live.’’ Upon direct questioning, the patient said that he felt very depressed. The stimulation was stopped, and within 10 s, the patient stopped crying and returned to his previous mental status.
