I, too, have trouble coming up with the right thing to say in the moment. Recently a white guy started doing a racist Japanese accent in front of me, and I rolled my eyes, shook my head in a “you should be embarrassed” way, and walked away from him. This will be my go-to move from now on.
I really need to practice saying “what a weird, rude thing to say” to the people who say weird, rude things to me

So much of my income just goes toward donations now, and I don’t even make much money. That’s not me “virtue signaling,” that’s me saying that the situation in the world has me so stressed out that I have to donate money to self-soothe and to convince myself I’m not helpless in the face of evil

Just saw one of those “best cities” rankings that placed Taipei at 60 BEHIND SAN JOSE and I would just like the compiler of that list know that they are bad and should feel bad

Those elite SFF mags you want to get published in aren’t going to publish you if they don’t exist. Subscribe!
In light of the astronomical increases for my health insurance next year, I thought it would be a good time to encourage people to subscribe. (A few hundred should cover it. Sigh.)

Sometimes I think about how Anthony Bourdain presented this image of masculinity that was actually positive (Try new things! Be respectful of other cultures!) and how many young men grew up influenced by that. Has anyone else come to fill that niche? Or is it all just dipsh*ts like Andrew Tate now?

My friend @erikaswyler.bsky.social is not an AI engineer, but she is a smart and thoughtful person, and I think her latest novel “We Lived on the Horizon” has a lovely vision of AI that frankly I wish tech bros would read except I don’t think tech bros read
There are quite a few ethical and justice oriented AI people who talk about having lifelong love for a vision of AI that is being trashed by the current thing, and I wonder if any of those positive visions have been articulated somewhere? What is it ppl think AI is supposed to be instead of this?

In the last chapter of Alice’s memoir, “Year of the Tiger,” she wrote her own future obituary.

The wonderful “oracle, storyteller, cyborg, trouble-maker, activist, night owl” we loved so much closed it with:

“Enjoy all of Alice’s good shit, and may you create some good shit as well.”
