Trump and the federal government continue to brutally violate protestors' rights. But don't take it from me -- hear it straight from Jennifer, an Evanston resident violently detained for hours on Halloween.

i call this view 'reactionary centrism' - the problem with it is that modern fascism *cannot* be appeased; they don't want a few compromises in women's sports, they want a total social transformation and the end of liberal democracy

you give them a bone, then another, then they want your arm

The New York Times quickly sending out Douthat to argue that Mamdani’s victory doesn’t really matter is so predictable it borders on self-parody.

Remember, folks: Every time the Right wins an election, it’s an undeniable expression of the will of the people. If a lefty wins, it’s just a blip.

The Tea Party never reached the magnitude of No Kings. Yet it was covered as if it represented “real America,” just like MAGA today. Those are not empirical assessments, but articles of faith – ideological claims about the world that are widely shared in the American mainstream discourse.

NEW: We reviewed 700+ videos, hours of footage from ICE protesters and counterprotesters in Portland.

In 2 months before Trump said he was sending the National Guard, federal officers fire on, grab, pepper-spray or tear gas people 20 times -- without charging anyone. "Gratuitous," one expert said.
What Really Happened in Portland Before Trump Deployed the National Guard
In the two months before Trump’s decision, criminal charges were announced against only three people. On nights when physical conflict did erupt, it often came from police firing on, shoving, pepper-s...

Donating millions to kiss up to Trump is nothing compared to the billions these companies have at stake in federal contracts and enforcement decisions.

No fewer than 28 billionaires donated at least 100k to beat Zohran Mamdani. Their overt attempt to buy the election provided Mamdani with perfect talking points. From @ryanlcooper.com: trib.al/LEnjMCa
America’s Dumbest Billionaires Fail to Stop Zohran Mamdani - The American Prospect
It’s encouraging on many levels: New York City didn’t submit to a campaign of flagrant bigotry from disgraced two-time loser Andrew Cuomo, and Americans, particularly young ones, can still be politically inspired by a good candidate with a good message.

A fascistic movement controls the government; they are building an authoritarian state; but they have not been able yet to extend authoritarian rule across society. A democracy no more, but not a consolidated autocratic regime yet.

This is seriously one of those things that probably blows the minds of most people outside of the United States.

A “swearing in” should obviously be completely ceremonial, and should have no legal weight at all.

THE ELECTION GIVES THE WINNER THE ROLE, not the Speaker.

It really makes no sense.
Swearing in isn’t some ceremony. You aren’t a member of Congress until it happens. He knows that.

No phones, no staff, nothing.

I had to escort her into the Capitol on Wed bc Capitol police must treat her as a public visitor until she’s sworn in. And solo visitors aren’t allowed during shutdown!
Johnson: "Grijalva should be working for her constituents right now. I don't know what she's doing. I keep seeing their political stunt videos. She should be in her office. She should be working or in the district for her constituents" (Grijalva is not in fact a Rep. b/c Johnson refuses to seat her)
