cr: love in the time of cholera by marquez
let’s talk about books!
ask me about donating your kidney (no, not to me, I’m all good, thanks!)
Love in the time of Co okera is an absolute banger and i feel like a dumb dumb for sitting on it for so long. Savoring every last page.

Never came around on blood meridian. I liked it a bit better before the end, but that shiz is jot for me.

Love in the time of cholera IS. Shiz nabbed me in the first 10 pages i’m all sold out on this feller.

Now more than halfway through blood meridian and it feels like a damn slog, i am barely interested at all. The prose is curious, it’s my first mccarthy, but thus far i do not see anything that has brought this book so much attention. I am not invested in any of it. Idc how masterful the setting

Finished and enjoyed Mystic River. Thought it was a much better book than movie.

Remember feeling uninterested when i saw the movie in like 2003 or whenever it came out, rewatched it after finishing book, felt the same way. Portions were tight with suspense, but the sum came up short.

there's a moment in PARADISE LOST where Satan arrives in Eden and realizes Hell isn't a place; it's a thing he carries within him and it'll follow him wherever he goes. and i think about that when i see these awful rich men whose monstrous wealth has enriched them not at all

Alright i flipped on then back off again on Sabbath’s Theater. It felt like the wrong book, then made me laugh out loud a few times and I decided I liked it, but then it changed back, felt like wrong book at wrong time again. Not unhappy i read it, and i would like some more roth, i think.

I think in this mode pretty often:

Will this be a paragraph, a page, or a chapter in the Post 9/11 USA history course. Will the course be popular? Amongst who? When will they be engrossed reading about this period? Easy to see how disorienting it will be.
history teacher in 50 years: So in September, that’s when the president signed an executive order criminalizing anti-fascism and saying all resistance would be crushed

student: oh so that’s when the whole country realized they were living under fascism

teacher: haha what? oh no lol not at all. no.

I went with Sabbath’s Theater and afraid the timing is off - reads like a book i might have devoured at another time but now plumbing the depths of depravity is not exactly my jam.

I loved

Lush Life by Richard Price

I have added some of his other titles to my reading list.

Shortly will start Sabbath’s Theater by Philip Roth

Or

Manhattan Transfer by John Dos Passos

Or

Mystic River by Dennis Lehane

Feel free to weigh in and tell me what to read next!

When you play hand-stacking with your partner and the little (or big) dog, the best part of the 'hands in' game is the reaction from the dog.

Just doing my bit to increase post volume!

I like booke.

I really loved the Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides.

I’ve barely started Creation by Gote Vidal but its shaping up to be a real banger.

I think Manhattan Transfer by John Dod Passos is next.

Lmk if you’ve read any of them!

I'd be upset but for many facts....America no longer exists. There is no Congress holding the president in check. There is no supreme court adhering to justice. There is no electorate that has the mental capacity to understand how American government is supposed to work.

Passed halfway point of The Name of the Rose and THIS is the right book at the right time. What fun!

Wow, ok, so an american dream did finally become mildly more interesting in the last 30 pages, a little too late to rescue me, but still better than nothing.

I think expect if i had been taking notes and asking questions there would have been a much neater package for me at the end but since i…

Why am I on bsky?

Behold!
Okay so my post-Conclave googling re: papal names led me to discover Pope Benedict IX, the only pope to be elected THREE times. How does one end up being elected pope not once, not twice, but thrice? I'm glad you asked.

Not enjoying An American Dream by Norman Mailer. I have read a couple of knock-outs of his, and a few dull, overwritten clunkers. Afraid this is another clunker.

I may have met it where it lives at another time, at another age, but I don’t know when that would have been.
