Regulations are necessary. Corporations naturally try to skimp on costs.

I'm no epidemiologist, but what if for public health we got rid of all the scientists and their centuries of human knowledge clawed from the vast sea of human ignorance with rigor and testing, and turned it all over to people who were educated by vape-pen bro podcasts and their own magical thinking.
This bears repeating.

The whole, ‘good for your immune system’ rhetoric is nonsense generally, but it’s PARTICULARLY dangerous when it comes to measles 👇

Tragic news: The breeding male of Oregon's Metolius pack was recently found killed near Sisters, Oregon.

We've contributed to the $30.5K reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the killing of this federally protected wolf.

To the surprise of no one in Texas rn, wind power hit a record last night at 28,470 megawatts. (It's *very* windy here today.) Another day of nearly 75% of demand met by renewables and 85% emission free.

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.

18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it.

We made this website to tell our story:

Another dataset I like is from the National Atmospheric Deposition Program, which has maps of the US that show we fixed the acid rain problem by implementing stricter emission controls on power plants.

What's the single most perfect sound a human can hear? I think it has to be the wind rustling through the trees when there is no other noise around.

Started writing this year.

It’s a lot like taking a shower. Sometimes getting wet and naked sounds awful, but I know I ought to do it. And then once I’m in, everything is cozy and warm while I’m immersed in these worlds and I don’t want to get out! 📚

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold.

We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940.

2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.

this is put very concisely and I just wanna report from middle age that you can fight this within yourself. it happens! you soften! but you just keep checking in with yourself and being sure that softening is toward people who are threatened, who have it worse than you. simple internal housekeeping!
everyone anywhere near the mainstream feels the way the wind is blowing and is looking for an excuse to move rightward to improve their standings in what comes next
