I’m going to reiterate my view that ‘illiberal democracy’ is a mutually exclusive term.

You can face an illiberal polity where people get to vote, but that isn’t a democracy.

I can’t imagine why I feel the need to restate this at the moment.

The shooters didn’t have Palestinian flags in their car, they had IS flags in there. No one’s reported seeing them at pro-Palestine marches, or using this phrase at all.

It makes zero sense for their actions to have legal bearing on Palestinians using a phrase about “shaking off” their oppressors
I support changes to hate speech laws, and there are sensible changes among what NSW government is proposing, but criminalising the phrase "globalise the intifada" based on a bad faith reading propagated not by the people who say it but by the lobby opposed to Palestinian rights is not one of them.

Can’t stop thinking about this. The Trump administration is essentially extorting hospitals into dropping gender-affirming care—without Medicare or Medicaid they’d go bankrupt. It’s akin to a backdoor ban even for people with private insurance, a proposal that wouldn’t pass Congress.
Under the proposed rule issued by the Trump Administration today, any Medicare- or Medicaid-participating hospital would be barred from providing gender-affirming care to *any child*, even if the care is not paid for by Medicare or Medicaid.

By essentially redacting most photos but Epstein and Bill Clinton, the DOJ is further undermining any pretense that the agency is anything other than a Trump goon squad. And for what, bc this ploy is not going to pass muster with victims.

The hypocrisy over the national ignorance towards other cultural groups and religions proves this to be a massive colonial lie.

The New School owns about a billion dollars worth of art, most of which is not on display. They could sell the two Warhols they own and raise $100 million tomorrow. But they’d rather close academic departments.
New School “administrators have started to implement a plan to close, overhaul or merge about 30 academic programs or majors; pause nearly all admissions to doctoral programs; and offer buyouts or early retirement to what professors say is about 40 percent of the full-time faculty.”

So the Epstein Files are:
–not complete
–comically redacted
–not in a “searchable” format

The Trump-Vance administration had months to recover from the embarrassing influencer binder photo-op and this is what they came up with.

This is what they think of you

Rep. Ro Khanna says the Trump DOJ's production "does not comply with" the Epstein Files Transparency Act.

Khanna says he and Rep. Thomas Massie "are exploring all options" — including impeachment of DOJ officials, inherent contempt, or referring individuals for obstruction of justice.

The NSW premier’s outrageous rhetoric on peaceful protests sows division in our community. It’s unbecoming of his office
The antisemitic attack in Bondi was an act of hate-fuelled violence. Rushing through regressive laws in such distressing times is poor leadership – and dangerous

I mean it seems like the administration just keeps stepping on rakes. By releasing a buffoonishly redacted and incomplete set of docs they just prolong the story and suspicion. What’s the strategy here?

Honestly, though, begs the question... why did this even occur? Everyone involved should be fired or quit or whatever the process is. I'm not actually thankful they rescinded it so much as wanting accountability for why it even happened in the first place.
And just like that, SFWA capitulates. Keep fighting. It works.

There are not two equal sides. It is almost everyone vs almost no one.

70% of Australians wanted tougher gun laws *before* Bondi.

Generative AI is very much operating on the same mythology early crypto and gig economy apps were, that people saw massive amounts of money being shovelled into it and assumed it there must be tremendous upside.

The reality is these things are funded by a mix of woo and spite.
I cannot think of *one* "here to stay" argument that survives the VCs running out of money to set on fire for chatbots in 1.5-2 years at most. Then the API prices 10x.

I have a list, and all the "here to stay" arguments fall to it:
