"Hey, you. Do you want to get out of here?"

My debut novel, As the Devil Drives, is now available! A poly, queer, high-fantasy road trip about a deserter trying to reunite with his sister!

A promotional image for As The Devil Drives, by Rhem T. Bright comprised of three rows.
The first row is composed of cool tones. An image of a stone cell with a tall window accompanies a man with strong arms holding an axe.
The middle row features a panoramic highway cut through the hills. The sky is a heavy grey and the landscape rocky and cut with a warm green.
The final row has sunlight hitting straight red hair beside a black and white image of an open doorway with an iron gate.

A good editor is a fucking magician who will find ways to elevate your voice in ways that you never previously thought possible.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

We were discussing James Joyce in class and the next thing I know, I'm on the train trying the hardest I have ever tried to not sing the Emerald Rose back catalog out loud.

They referenced it in the credits but gave it a cutesy robot body to try and make it seem on the same level as Tom or Crow or Cambot and that's about when I started yelling so hard that I woke myself up.

I sure did wake up from a nightmare that they brought back MST3K but the only writer was Chat-GPT.

Thanks, brain. Super helpful.

Now's a good time to mention that no part of my videos, script, thumbnail, footage, or otherwise, will ever have any AI used in any part of the process. You'll never have to wonder.

I think this is bang on, and gets at a sense of what I see in play with stuff from Dwarf Fortress and Qud to Rimworld to Crusader Kings and the Sims: a desire to understand the world, whether a familiar or an alien one, through play

"'The more we try to understand what's going on in the world around us—the more we don't just withdraw into a hermitude of my family and I as a nuclear unit, the more we try to understand our society—I think the more these kinds of games speak to us,' Short said."
Founder of Dwarf Fortress and Caves of Qud publisher Kitfox Games says its procgen sims for sickos are 'giving storytelling tools back to the people when games and passive media took them away'
Streets of Fortuna, Kitfox's own in-development "megasim," is chasing that same systems-driven storytelling.

All right I've been in my new apartment a week as of tomorrow.

Time to finally begin the no-doubt-laborious process of bullying PODs into giving my stuff back

See! They finally get it!! If they share the bed then they can share the human!!!
A photo of two cats on a bed. The white cat is asleep with his chin resting on a bundled up blanket. The black and white cat is laying a couple of feet away and staring at him. This is notable because three months ago, neither cat could stand to be in sight of the other.

I just don't see how its productive to ask questions like "but what if a renouncer has a violent dream, are they kicked out of being a renouncer" when there's SO many more interesting discussions we could be having, why do so many of you feel like you're trying to find a "gotcha"
rhem.bsky.social
I swear I'm trying to be less judgmental as a person, but some of the questions that come up during my Religions of South and East Asia class - its like damn, sorry about your deepseated cultural Christisnity, hope you get better soon.

all discourse aside, there is one machine with consciousness. it's printers. they are alive and conscious and they hate you and they'd take your arm clean off if you let them. never trust a printer.

this site has done so many things right when it comes to building tools that allow us to escape some of the worst parts of twitter. I legitimately admire many of the technological choices they've made.

but for the love of god, EVERYTHING IN THIS THREAD. go get a communications team!!!!!

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
www.citizensinformation.ie/en/employmen...
Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Can't believe that I seem to have successfully befriended a bisexual trans masc Deltarune liker within my first month of school. We really are, like, gravitationally drawn to our own, huh?

Me: Walking down stairs basically doesn't even count as exercise, right? So I'll walk down these 18 flights of stairs just to get used to fitting the time to climb them into my schedule.

Me, 8 flights down: Hey should my legs be shaking like this
rhem.bsky.social
Nah it was probably the ghosts cursing you

The giveaway was the eyebrows, wasn't it

It probably somewhat undercuts my point that I had to zoom the camera out to 0.5 to get them both in the frame but on the other hand, its a smallish room and I couldn't make the angles work otherwise

We're talking about "using AI in academic writing" this morning and I hope everybody is prepared for me to be EXTREMELY fucking opinionated.

I know that writing argumentative essays is one of the skills this class is supposed to help us develop but some arguments ain't worth having
rhem.bsky.social
Of course, Bright and Merida engaging in more typical cat behavior means that I'm being woken up at 3 am to the sound of Merida growling and I have to yell "no fighting on the bed" while I wait to go back to sleep, but its a worthwhile tradeoff for waking up at 7 am to find them both coexisting
rhem.bsky.social
At the risk of being terribly maudlin on a Monday morning, its increasing clear that he never got over Hobbes - they barely knew each other a couple of months, then Hobbes got sick and threw Bright in a tizzy, and Merida coming along a year later was STILL too soon.
