We are not going back.

But how do we go forward now in a world where the only certainty is uncertainty and we need to embrace the paradox of dichotomy if we are to be whole?

The brink seems a little closer now than when I wrote this 12 months ago. Beyond it there is still hope and joy and community to be found if we embrace change in ourselves and in our systems.

Nobody ever planted a tree in this photo. It was a working gravel pit 30 years ago.

We need to get over our obsession with planting trees and let nature do the job. The results are just SO much better.

It's also about realising we are not, in fact, central to everything. 🌍

It’s not just about what you remove (cars, noise, dirty air). It’s about what you add (people walking, a lot of bike parking, trees, outdoor dining, and room for kids to play safely). Amsterdam: 1986 and today.

I’ve spent the last 18 months writing about the Roman Empire. In some ways, we’ve progressed immeasurably far in the last 1500 years. But there are still too many things about contemporary politics that I think would have felt all too familiar to them. I persist in my optimism that we can do better.
