I finally got around to turning what started as a presentation at ESC in Florence a couple of years ago into an article in CMC! 🥳

Open access, and lots of pictures! (Somehow, the PDF has better photo placements than the online layout)

New! Anna Anderson on Medical Debt Behind Bars

Incarcerated people have a constitutional right to care but often lack access to insurance and must bear the costs (and debt) of copays, fees, medications, emergency charges, and ambulance & hospital bills. inquest.org/medical-debt...
Medical Debt Behind Bars - Anna Anderson - Inquest
Incarcerated people accrue debt for nearly all of their medical care. This makes a mockery of their right to health care—and saddles them with devastating debt upon release.

This is such a profoundly bad move by the #EuroCrim2025 organisers/Board.

Bad for #criminology in Europe. It undermines work that has been done under its auspices.

People should ask for a return of their conference/membership fees.

I hope @britsoccrim.bsky.social is paying attention.

Here we go #eurocrim2025. Holding the conference at a US institution in Athens with American security measures that you would expect at an embassy does not feel right especially considering the current human rights violations happening in the US.

US military spending is the reason Americans can’t have nice things like free healthcare.

“Federal spending on the Department of Defense accounts for half of all discretionary spending (49%) and more than half (60%) of federal employment as of the end of fiscal year 2024.” @costsofwar.bsky.social

ESC colleagues: petition & important vote at the General Assembly. If not boycotting, vote. Or a 3rd option: use presentation time to discuss complicity and promote attendance at the GE?

I'm scheduled to present on asylum seekers & everyday resistance. It would be unethical if I didn't resist too

Norway’s parliamentary elections are coming up. As in many other European countries, the right is focusing on immigration and crime. But Norway remains a remarkably prosperous, diverse, and safe society. Rarely have the right’s talking points seemed more unreal.
