I think some of the fear people have about saying fascism is here is about there being some point of no return? but this isn't a novel with a climax, and politics unfolds via complex contingent processes: there's always a moment to make different, better choices, even as the pathways get harder

“I’m not saying I’ll never fly again. Family emergencies, meaningful work: if I need to, I’ll go. But I won’t fly casually. I no longer see it as something frivolous or limitless.”

Doing it for the memes.

On November 4, 1909, as a joke to prove that pigs could fly, Englishman John Moore-Brabazon made the first live cargo flight by airplane when he put a small pig in a waste-paper basket tied to a wing-strut of his airplane.

The REAL trick is, not letting the zombies know you’re so eager to die they get icked because it seems desperate. Be very depressing to have a zombie horde go “ooooh, no, you want it TOO much.” Embarrassing.

I dreamt this skeet in full, so I thought I’d share it:

“It’s become astronomically harder to make art in the last ten years. I hope artists take that into consideration when evaluating their careers, instead of beating themselves up.”

And then I drove a teenage George Harrison back to Durham

“Comparing different overseas travel options:
– flying is worst,
– ferry travel with a car is better,
– ferry travel without a car is better again
– and bus, train, hitching and cycling are best!”
Today is the launch date of ByLandAndSea.ie ! A guide to travel to and from Ireland without flying. Please share and follow!

In troubling times, people experiencing high stress or crippling anxiety deal with it in different ways. Some have a therapist, some have a deep breathing exercise & some even have a personal mantra.

I think properly grieving this would help us all open ourselves to the real joys of joint struggle and messy community that were never compatible with more individually oriented lives. And it would make us more effective antifascists.

I would love it if we could accelerate the process of acknowledging that people are not going to be able to live the lives they'd imagined for themselves, lives where they could select where and how to contribute socially and could concentrate on pursuing happiness and "success" for their families.

Rather than pausing to linger, American pedestrians are racing through streets – and doing so alone.

A new study from Ed Glaeser, Carlo Ratti, et al. raises troubling questions about the decline of streetlife.

Urban pedestrians are walking faster and doing less socializing, according to a new study of NYC, Boston and Philadelphia. Is technology to blame, or public space itself?

Art should be funded like science. To properly fund art, you fund failure. Funding failure will give you occasional excellence. Creating any art with the aim of it being popular enough to make money, will give you consistent mediocrity. Arists need funding to play and fail because that's the process
Let me tell you about the weird business that delivers art into our lives, and the impact it has on the long-term careers of artists. This is a thread prompted by yet another article on authors' incomes, and the inevitable reactions from the 'people-would-pay-if-it-was-worth-it-to-them' brigade. 1/
