“Perhaps his greatest act of courage, though, was simply to tell the truth as he saw it after he took off his nation’s uniform.”

Here’s a piece I wrote years ago of which I’m pretty proud. Major General Smedley D. Butler, USMC, isn’t nearly as well-known or well-remembered as he should be.
The Anti-War Marine
It is both truism and cliché that “no one hates war more than the soldiers who fight.” Many historians have demonstrated that political causes are often quickly discarded among the mud, bullets, an…

Clay goblet from Early Bronze Age Troy.

Known as a depas goblet after the Homeric ‘depas amphikypellon', recent residue analysis shows these two-handled vessels were used for drinking wine some 4,250 years ago!

You know who was great?

Claudia Cardinale.

Terrific actress, fine human being, never became a fascist. Also extraordinarily beautiful.

She was a feminist and a UNESCO goodwill ambassador.

She died earlier this year. Just remembering her today for no particular reason.

Got this fantastically clever Christmas gift. It's a dedicated algorithm free music player that you can carry around without the distractions of your phone, and it can hold thousands of songs without needing an internet connection. The UI is so simple anyone can manage it. Fantastic

The Christian right’s deification of Donald Trump amounts to idolatry.

Trump’s malignantly narcissistic response to the murder of Rob Reiner reveals a deeply demonic figure: one callously indifferent to any life but his own, the antithesis of a true Christian.

You’ll never catch the market. By the time you’ve written it, the market is gone. Write what you’re on fire to write, and sometimes the market shows up.
