I remember discussing the scurfy mouse in immunology class, which initially arose from basic research done at a national lab with government funds (Oak Ridge NL, near where my father grew up)...what an important finding to earn this year's Nobel Prize.

Congratulations to Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. It also demonstrates the fairness of the prize, as Mary Brunkow is a Senior Program Manager (not a professor) at the @isbscience.org

Sharing this excellent review now out from postdoc Sarah McLarnon! Lots of useful info on 3D imaging, quantification of imaging data, and how this has been applied to the kidney. And since it's #FluorescenceFriday, sharing a figure with our own imaging data!

My Ph.D. advisor taught me to celebrate upon submission. And re-submission. Or in this case, re-re-re-re-re-resubmission.

Over 20 years after Julius’s lab and mine cloned TRPM8, it is rewarding to see this science helping patients. The TRPM8 agonist Tryptyr treats dry eye by increasing tear production. A reminder that NIH-funded curiosity-driven research translates to medicines.

Its very easy to feel defeated these days. Getting to see what our HEAL K12 scholars have achieved is a much needed boost. The future of pain medicine is strong :)

No better time to call or email your members of Congress. Next year’s NIH budget is being debated in the Senate. A new nonpartisan campaign is making it easy to defend science and protect America’s innovation. Just follow this link to contact your representatives: www.protectscienceandinnovation.org

First dorsal root ganglion prep of the new lab, a few logistical hiccups but we have cultured neurons! Thanks to the colleagues who let me borrow so many things!
