Does this seem like a city who wants its workers to be back downtown?? For context, I live in central Ottawa @otttransitriders.bsky.social @abetterottawa.bsky.social

Economists almost universally agree that the tariffs imposed by President Trump will cost the average American household hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars every year in higher goods costs.
What Trump's tariffs will mean for your wallet
One forecast estimates Trump's tariffs will cut household purchasing power by $1,000 a year.

My chart for the Globe. TL;dr - birth rates in Canada rose when we had aggressive income redistribution, high taxation, big infrastructure spending, strong unions, and loads of new housing development. Absent those factors, birth rates have always fallen.

I find zero value in celebrity culture until we get to Keri Russell, who doesn't hop on a bike for the "look at me" photo shoot, but rather lives the bikes-for-transportation lifestyle in Brooklyn NY.

“A car-choked capital is transforming before our eyes, the dream of urbanites around the world who are eager to reassess the automobile’s dominant role in the city. The question posed by [Paris] transcends the daily debate over bicycles & cars. It is nothing less than this: Who is the city for?”

How do teenage girls experience the city?

Few ask the question.

This great project seeks to answer it, and see how we can make cities better for them.

As designers of urban spaces that are intended to reflect and cater to everyone, we pose the question: How can the design of urban spaces support the well-being of teenage girls?

I’m trying to think why Americans would think Canadians would ever want to become the “51st state”? Is it the school shootings? The lack of access to abortion? The lower literary rates? The greater income inequality? The healthcare debt? Or maybe the shorter life expectancy?

I can’t tell you how much this means to me every year @rhodri.biz. Thank you for putting up with us.
1/ So, where were we? Oh yep, #duvetknowitschristmas. Firstly, some admin: Twitter/X has evidently been run into the ground by a preening, self-radicalised clot, so while there's a slim possibility that this annual celebration might be thriving over there, I won't know cos I won't be looking.

Someone needs to be tasked with watching for posts on #duvetknowitschristmas on twitter and threads and making sure we see them on Bluesky. Anyone up for that?

A friendly reminder that if you’re in traffic, you ARE traffic.

And mobility is about space.

Here's the thing, city officials KNOW what makes a good city. It's documented, the data is there, and we have test cases. But Canadian/US officials don't try because it might upset someone in a car. Officials aren't even aiming for good cities. They are aiming to maintain a vote.
Utrecht, Netherlands gets a lot of well-deserved attention for its best-practice urban biking. Don’t forget though, it’s also just a gorgeous, historic, dense, human-scaled walkable city for people. HT @luccampbell.bsky.social #Dutch

REMINDER: Those choosing to live in subsidized suburbs for a bigger house and yard are NOT also entitled to free-flow car traffic capacity (aka an “easy car commute”) into the city at the expense of the taxes, health, safety (hint: bike-lanes) & quality of life of city-dwellers.

The fact that a massive yellow bus that transports CHILDREN with flashing red lights was still not enough that we needed to add an extended arm (with cameras) with a second flashing stop sign to physically block the road from drivers tells me all I need to know about our auto culture.

There's not enough Woonerf-based content on here yet

I do love a good Woonerf, a concept developed in the Netherlands during the 1960s and 1970s, creating people-friendly shared spaces with reduced traffic.

Every year I’m told that there are only 4 biking months a year and so we can’t invest in bike lanes. Here I am taking my kids to and from school by bike in mid November and still no bike lanes.
