Hytale is releasing today:

A game I previously worked on is releasing tomorrow! I am super happy to see it go live, especially because of the development story behind it.

It has some of the most awesome block game editing workflows I have ever seen, and I'm looking forward to seeing how folks use them for UGC.
Less than 24 hours until Early Access release... we are almost home ❤️ #Hytale

And if you have never heard of Hytale: It has an immensely huge community behind it, even though it only just launched.

Pretty crazy to be able to post this

I think the weight of 'Every previous release was amazing, so this one will be too' is what shakes up many sequels at inopportune moments.

genuinely one of the thrills of getting to work on a life sim is opening our playground\gymnasium maps and flying through them

Hell yeah! Technically that one’s a Zoo, I gave a talk about them at GodotFest last year: youtu.be/uNyswn-Oct0?...

Sometimes I say "I may be wrong" and I realize I could probably just tag that at the end of every sentence I ever say. It's the same vibe as the top of this thread.

One time I opened the clock app and it updated. Times have changed.

Exactly, you always have to ask: Why, why, why, why, why? rystorm.com/blog/why-why...
The power of asking why, why, why, why, why. — Robin-Yann Storm, Product & UX Designer for Tools
When someone comes to you with a request, it’s good to keep asking why. Usually a few times to get to the bottom of it.

When someone asks “Wouldn’t users want to do X?” the correct answer is: “Let’s see if they do.”

Critically: Not ask if they do, but see if they do. If you ask anyone a question about whether they want a new feature they will rarely say no. It’s like asking someone if they want free ice cream.

Just because there is an argument, does not mean the argument is any good. It is very easy to think of potential issues and potential solutions. And when you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

That is why user testing is a critical step. You have to validate your assumptions.

My part in its development was small, especially in contrast to the 10+ years others have worked on it. Xael, @thomasfrick.bsky.social, the art director of Hytale, has worked on it for a very long time.

He wrote a thread about his feelings, which any game dev should read, and recognize:
Not sure how I will react when #Hytale goes live, but I will for sure have a tissue box for my eyes next to me.

You said you liked Godot, but what is the biggest thing you'd like to see changed about it?
January 12, 2026 at 10:29 AM
Hey Kenney, I was wondering: Are any of the assets free?
