Good to see this.

The law partners surrendering on core rule of law issues to Trump are legitimately the most contemptible people in the country.

Unreal. The Trump administration is disappearing migrants to places that aren't even their origin countries, then refusing to say which countries they were sent to by claiming this is "classified," then refusing to say *why* the info is classified:

They voted for them in a majority of those districts anyway though. Maybe not a great idea to vote for the tax cuts for billionaires and social safety net cuts for everyone else party if you didn’t want that bsky.app/profile/data...
There is not a single congressional district in the U.S. where more than 9% of voters support cuts to the home care that Medicaid covers.

It's not a new argument, of course, but Chesterton dismissed it effectively in 1908.

What Judge Xinis is banking on is that the government does not want to spend two weeks in discovery. Two big things can happen:

(1) They just make the call and get him back

(2) They spend two weeks creating a public record of their own fuck ups and then get sanctioned

Didn’t get a chance to post this earlier, but there was a huge turnout in support of Kilmar Abrego Garcia at the federal courthouse.

From my seat in the jury room, I heard the supporters outside chanting throughout the hearing.

I can’t think of a precedent for this!

We live in interesting times and I’m flying to El Salvador tonight to report on the senator’s mission and the effort to return Garcia to the United States.

Watch this space
Mr. Abrego Garcia was illegally abducted by the Trump Admin and, by their own admission, wrongly deported to El Salvador. He shouldn’t have to spend another second away from his family.

I'm flying to El Salvador tomorrow morning to check on his condition and discuss his return.

“Aiming for big structural change is politically costly” doesn’t mean “never do it” but it does mean you should try to avoid wishful thinking.
This is literally a rage bait troll post that says “I don’t do rage bait troll posts” and hopefully the irony is clear to all.

That said, one point requires response:

“Doing what’s popular [now]” is BY DEFINITION “Don’t do big structural change ever” and @mattyglesias.bsky.social knows it.
Some of the big ideas I’ve been associated with in my career:

1. Supply and demand applies to housing

2. People like politicians who take popular positions

3. Police help prevent crime

4. The Orange Man is bad

5. China’s large population matters a lot for power politics

The Trump administration has been grossly negligent in its handling of these deportations. In addition to the due process violations. Grossly negligent conduct can be criminal and tortious, though likely no one in the administration will ever be held liable for such conduct.
The trump folks (i believe miller) admitted during the first term that the family separation policy was primarily about deterrence, not practical/resource issues. They wanted immigrants to think, if you come here, we will take your children and our system is such a mess, you may not see them again.
