When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.

Why would you need to put a pause on a story that has been meticulously fact-checked and lawyered?

Sounds like the kind of story you’d want to run right away!

People sometimes ask me what harm AltNPS is doing, and it's this. This right here.

AltNPS didn't do ANYTHING for this cause, and never even mentioned it before today. @protectparks.bsky.social is who made the difference (among others), but lots of people will now believe it was AltNPS.

And it’s already pretty fucking bad!

I don’t know how anyone can still talk about “the AI revolution” with a straight face. Reuters story about a railroad company that has sunk $300,000 into “developing AI products” and appears to have made…a chatbot that doesn’t work?

Coming back to this, I'm still struck by the implication that academics should care if the AI pushers "trust" all our work that's done without AI.

I don't know, man, you all seemed to trust our work enough to steal it from us wholesale.
I would struggle to trust an academic who doesn‘t know how to
use AI tools.
Which is not the same as not being critical.

THIS. *They stole your fellow writers' FUCKING HEARTS' BLOOD to power their fancy-ass text-based writer-imitation machine.* You wanna get all NUANCED about that? Your easygoing take on that issue will sooner or later (most likely sooner) be used to steal *your* stuff. Let's see how *you* like it. 🫤
And please also, AGAIN, never forget that they are inherently unethical to use because no one gave permission for their research or writing to be used in it. It is all stolen, and if you're using the plagiarism machine, please keep that in mind.
My friends, I say this with all the love in my heart: Right now might not be the moment for “But we should be TOLERANT and NUANCED about the plagiarism machines!”

Your tolerance and “nuance” will be weaponised by the grifters and their apologists. Please respect yourselves more.

This has been said a million different times and ways and it never seems to penetrate but I’ll try again: Using AI to “do” art isn’t possible. Art is not the process of coming up with a good idea to get started and then executing it flawlessly in the style of someone you admire.

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out.

This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.
