There appears to be no accountability for those who pollute our waterways. Sterner punishment and the revoking of licences need to be part of the solution.

How many chances should be given to get it right?

Non-compliance under our licence system appears to be more the norm than the aberration when it comes to protecting our water quality

Deputy Whitmore asking the question we all want to know the answer to.

Although they didn't say it, it seems the answer to the question about when the EPA pull the plug on a non-compliant discharge licence is never. They never have to date.

Polluters can do their thing and still get licenced.

Unfortunately what we're facing at Ladys Island in #Wexford is only the tip of the iceberg of a substantial national problem.

The combined support of @rodericogorman.bsky.social & @malcolmnoonan.bsky.social allow us to advocate for action at the highest levels of Government. Party leaders can ask more detailed Qs and Senator Noonan is on the Oireachtas Ctte on Climate, Energy & Environment.

All talk, no action. This is an uninspiring response from the Minister to Deputy Whitmore. #SaveLadysIslandLake

TD Jennifer Whitmore submitted 3 parliamentary questions to the Minister of State for Biodiversity seeking clarity on funding, leadership and cross-departmental coordination when it comes to Lady’s Island Lake.

The responses lacked detail and clarity.

The EPA's latest report on Ireland's rivers paints a depressing picture. Nitrate pollution of Irish rivers is getting worse.

We are still waiting for details on the action plan to #SaveLadysIslandLake

Fertiliser pollution of Irish rivers is getting worse - at a really bad time for the government
It comes just as the government is seeking an extension to Ireland’s nitrates derogation.

A blustery day for the pilgrims. Good to chat to the IFA Deputy President and the County Chairman at the roadside. It was a positive discussion and we had plenty of support from the public too. #SaveLadysIslandLake

Our group will be down at the lake this afternoon attending the pilgrimage and raising awareness of the issue. Come and say hello!

Thanks to the @irishtimes.com for giving us some good news on the wildlife front. As the article points out, wildlife are doing their part, time for the state to step up to #SaveLadysIslandLake

What is the punishment for pollution of this kind? Is there any kind of accountability for businesses and individuals who are found to be non-compliant? Our systems are failing us.

It seems like water quality at our local beaches has been a significant issue this summer. All of this is connected to a lack of action to support our water quality. It doesn’t need to be this way. We need top down action to depollute our waterways now.

Our volunteers spent another day gathering signatures for our petition to #SaveLadysIslandLake. This time, at the annual pilgrimage. Lady’s Island is a site of religious significance for Catholics. We had many engaging and supportive conversations about how to ensure action is taken.

Seems to be an issue everywhere.

Unfortunately, plans are no good unless they’re actioned. This is something we know all too well in #Wexford. Decades of plans but no action. #SaveLadysIslandLake

Unfortunately the situation in #Wexford is replicated across the country. In fact the water quality at many of #Wexford’s beaches have been so poor this summer that they’ve been closed to swimmers for significant periods. We need a top down approach to improve water quality across the board.
