Deep Blue is 30 years old and was capable of defeating chess grand champions. It could be housed in a single cabinet.

ChatGPT spans untold data centers devouring massive amounts of electricity and it got its ass whipped by an 8 bit gaming console from the 1970s.

And on the 'Beginner' difficulty level, too.

Someone else said something very similar to this the other day, but.

It really burns me that our (millennials') generation was legally terrorized for like, downloading Radiohead discographies

But we're supposed to be ok with billionaires stealing human intellectual output in its entirety bc AI

One reason I don't think it's useful to argue about the correct tactics for Democrats to win elections is winning elections isn't enough. They've won the presidency 5 out of 9 times since 1992 and where are we now. The question is how we create something better than a dead cat bounce party

This was a signal - and a warning - from our rapidly changing world, heard in every single part of it.

Best we listen up.

Revenue at Duolingo in 2024 was up 41% on 23 to $748M. Net income was up by 451% for same period and yet they're firing workers. We've long been at "insatiable greed" point of late stage capitalism. People may feel helpless but there's a very easy way to kick companies like this. Delete their apps.
I have completely deleted my Duolingo. I was informed by one of my kids that the company has removed most of its employees and 70% of the company is run by AI.

I urge everyone to delete their app.
Duolingo CEO says he's getting rid of contract employees and replacing them with AI
Duolingo employees can also expect their AI use to be graded in their performance reviews.

Kinda nuts that shows like Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Amphibia, Owl House, Infinity Train, Star vs The Forces of Evil and so many others are so popular but the studios just decided to stop making them. Was talking with a friend and her kid loves these shows but they’ve run out of episodes.

This is what I remind people about when they talk about the impact of the closures on the kids - they were terrible for mine too! But ppl have completely memory holed the horrors of mass death during that time and that will not serve us well in the next pandemic.
As someone who taught in-person and in great fear most all of 2020-2021 despite recent cancer and open heart surgery, I'm grateful for these paragraphs in @winterjessica.bsky.social's piece on pandemic school building closures.
