"Pat, why do you carry that ridiculous 600mm lens on long hikes?"

Buddy, I can see mountains reflected in the eyes of a trailside pika.
A pika sits on a mossy rock. Tighter crop of the same pika, focusing on its head. An even tighter crop, focusing more on the pika's eye. An extremely tight crop of the pika's eye, emphasizing their reflection of an early morning mountain scene.

'If we don’t act on climate change within the next few years, the world as we know it disappears.'

Economic hardship and the climate crisis have forced young adults to reshape their ideas of a successful life

Excited to share this, and grateful to everyone who made it possible.

The key message is important: acknowledge those who make what you do possible, regardless of their training or background!

This, and especially the meat-eating, should not be up for debate *especially among visible climate/enviro folks in the global north*. The inefficacy objection to individual action falls apart when you consider the visibility of communicators' actions.

Until people in the climate movement very publicly stop eating meat and flying, we're not going to seem trustworthy.

I will die on this hill.

Meat is a blind spot for people who care about climate. When I used to have dinner with my colleague Wally Broecker, the climate scientist who coined the term “global warming”, he would always order a steak.

Thousands and thousands of fish washed up at The Spit on the Gold Coast this morning. Fisheries are aware and monitoring the situation.

I cope by getting increasingly angry in the Concluding paragraph(s) of each of the scientific papers I write. Gone are the days of simply ‘reviewing the findings’ - we don’t have time for such nonsense! We’re in the midst of a climate, pollution & biodiversity emergency!

Do you sometimes see/report/handle dead wildlife as a scientist (including volunteer community scientists)?

If so, do you have any strategies for dealing with the stress and grief that these encounters can cause?

I'm building a toolkit for myself and for some other stressed out folks!

With the loss of not just individuals but entire ecosystems, everyone who truly cares needs their own ways to cope. Caring for yourself isn’t selfish — it’s what makes it possible to keep caring for the living world.

I feel like I write a small obituary for each bird I find. I research them and find out how far they migrate, what they eat, where they live, and share that with the public. It’s my way of honoring them and coping through the emotional loss.

Does anyone have good references for paper(s) that discuss the value of citing older literature (as opposed to focusing on recent, for example). What knowledge do we lose? Do we risk replication? Etc.

This is a must-read for anyone in academia. While it focuses on administrative positions in certain parts, it's such an excellent resource with stats and critiques of all the indigenization/reconciliation rhetoric that it's got something for everyone. Highly recommend.
