The #Arctic Ocean is full of life, not only polar bears live on the sea ice.

🚨 New @oceaniceeu.bsky.social preprint🚨 why has Antarctica stopped (net) losing mass, in spite of increased discharge?
Declining sea ice is part of the answer but increasingly heavy and frequent atmospheric rivers are most important factor.

Lots of important subtleties:
arxiv.org/abs/2510.03590
Screenshot of figures from the paper: Above a graph showing wiggly lines depicting the cumulative mass budget of Antarctica: a dark line swoops and wiggles downwards before stabilising at the end, colourful dashed lines (depicting snow fall) wiggle along constantly before sloping upwards at the same tme stabilisation occurs.
Below 6 maps of Antarctica in blues and red depicting the mass change in different basins.

I am happy to announce that we received major funding from Schmidt Sciences under their VICC program to study rapid #Permafrost Thaw Carbon Trajectories (PeTCaT). The 5-year project led by my team @awi.de partners with an international team to quantify how rapid thaw contributes to climate change.

We're investing $45M over 5 years to launch the Virtual Institute for the Carbon Cycle (VICC).

Four global teams will combine AI, advanced observations & modeling to close major carbon cycle gaps, strengthening climate projections worldwide.

🚨🌊 New highlight paper out today in Earth System Dynamics!

We find an observational constraint implying more future global ocean heat uptake, cloud feedback, and warming than the CMIP6 mean.

This contrasts with previous estimates based on past warming trends.

Increased future ocean heat uptake constrained by Antarctic sea ice extent
Abstract. The ocean takes up over 90 % of the excess heat stored in the Earth system as a result of anthropogenic climate change, which has led to sea level rise and an intensification of marine extre...

Last week the German Meteorological Society warned that "the 3-degree limit could be exceeded as early as 2050".

While not possible to fully rule out, the assessed warming scenarios we published in the IPCC AR6 report find this to be extremely unlikely.

Die Antarktis ist sehr träge im Klimasystem, ein schlafender Riese sozusagen. Sehr viel Eis und Ozean. Reagiert auf längeren Zeitskalen.

Remember Exxon Valdez? A similar event in the sea-ice-covered #Arctic would be far more devastating.

The rapture has just begun at the North Pole! First, there was a slight jitter, and then all the data was lost and remains in space.

This hopefully short interruption affects most sea ice information sources. It makes us realize again how dependent we are on this satellite data. Without it, we are virtually blind to the global picture.
