We used estimates of cat numbers and factors affecting their per capita predation rate to show that cats living or allowed to roam outdoors in Spain kill at least 500 000 000 animals per year
Huge numbers

Old-growth forests 🌲store lots of carbon and support biodiversity. Recent study of 3,503 tree rings across Europe shows that older forests, especially those with large trees, are crucial for long-term carbon storage, highlighting the need to protect them.👍

Last night I mentioned that William Bond had died, and a family member asked me what he had done. My response was that the two things I learnt from him were (a) sometimes the grasses win and (b) many ecosystems are meant to burn. I hope he wouldn't object to that summary. 🌏🌐

Nowhere in nature do finches encounter food sources like this: highly concentrated piles of seeds & droppings, stewing in moist gunk for days, weeks, months, attracting multiple species in very close proximity. This is pathogen porridge. In nature, seeds scatter thinly and are available briefly.

In the early hours of this morning, following 119.6mm of rainfall in 12hrs, the River Monnow burst its banks and flooded Monmouth. The usual river level is just under 2m, this morning it was 6.63m- even higher than the record-breaking level during the floods in 2020 (6.57m). Absolutely devastating.
