The "lanyard class" should almost always be parsed as an attack on women who work, and the enforcement of norms that make workplaces better for them.

This is his repeated attacks on what he calls the "lanyard class". Who are the terrible people who wear lanyards? Doctors & nurses, care workers, teachers, managers, administrators, secretaries. The people who hold society together, who keep everything running, who do the jobs he wouldn't stoop to.

Keep seeing the meme (in response to @timharford.ft.com) that White British Londoners are no less anti-immigration than the rest of the country, they are just "outnumbered". It's not true:

Disagree w her on plenty but the contempt for Diane Abbott demonstrated by a seemingly endless number of far lesser people than her is a long-running source of shame for Labour. A canker at the core of the party & emblematic of the underhanded way this clique have sought to run things

Main concern obviously the vile content of these messages but someone whose entire role was contingent on intelligent decision-making opting to send this stuff on a work server says rather a lot about the calibre of people at the top of gov right now. If he’s the ‘best brain’ no wonder we’re cooked.

Whatever you think of these messages, the reality is this story and Paul Ovenden's subsequent resignation has provoked pure fury from long-serving Labour aides. Many saying they do not believe Starmer should have accepted his resignation.

For both normative and 'it makes my job so much harder' reasons, I really think governments shouldn't appoint people where it is really hard to stretch out commentary on what they have done beyond 'obviously he has to resign'.

It is possible to overpolice trivia and underpolice racial hatred simultaneously

ALabour government that remains mute on racist hatred can have no credibility with ethnic minorities & many others for talk about cohesion and British values until it finds a voice on racism

If the X website is so broken that its complaints system is *routinely* defending unlawful racist abuse of "go home p__" then it urgently needs an EHRC intervention, and should be threatened with being shut down until Elon Musk is willing to operate his website *within* the laws of our country.
