I know I’m naive but it is pretty wild that the president of the United States just publicly declares he and the military killed some guys on a boat, multiple times, and the entirety of Congress doesn’t immediately hit a giant red IMPEACH button

Conor Gearty was, without hesitation, the best academic writer I’ve read. He was also a thoroughly decent and kind human being who fearlessly used his position speak truth to power.
Conor did law, politics and academia the right way and he will be sorely missed.

Breaking News: The EPA moved to stop requiring polluters to report their emissions of greenhouse gases. The proposal would end a key tool the government uses to track carbon dioxide, methane and other gases that are driving climate change.
E.P.A. to Stop Collecting Emissions Data From Polluters
The data, from thousands of coal-burning power plants, oil refineries, steel mills and other industrial facilities, is the country’s most comprehensive way to track greenhouse gases.

One of the defining features of authoritarian society is the ruthless but selective use of the machinery of repression—and associated propaganda about criminality and “order”—to immunize predatory behavior of the powerful while crushing everyone else into profitable obedience.

So counterproductive and, frankly, stupid

Cashless bail reduces crime. Pretrial incarceration causes more crime than pretrial detention prevents

Also, why should only people with money have access to mercy?

Scoop: Trump plans executive order to end "cashless bail" in D.C.
It's the latest step in the Trump-driven federal takeover of the capital city's law enforcement.

Chicago doesn't even crack the top 20 most dangerous cities. Denver has a higher crime rate than Chicago.

Chicago had the lowest number of homicides since 1962 last month. Just remember this for whatever happens next.

And we are hearing the same nonsense about London and other UK cities being overrun by crime and bedlam too. Social media culture allows for moral panics on steroids.

Fear of crime exaggerating the statistical risks is a constant of surveys over my 79 year life. Media and right wing politicians have much to answer for. And repairing broken windows
is good. Better still is socioeconomic policy enhancing security and welfare

The deployment of the national guard in Washington ignores the data. But Democrats must not ignore how people feel

“Trump says” vs. actual data on crime dropping in DC is not “Trump says vs. the Mayor says.”
It’s “Trump says” vs. fact.

Trump’s “crime & squalor” excuse is pretext & his naming other cities all w/Black mayors as his next targets compels an honest confrontation w/Trump’s racism & authoritarianism.

On @BBC today Trump’s takeover of the D.C. police & deployment of National Guard in response to a non-existent “emergency” was discussed by @washingtonpost.com editor @francesssellers.bsky.social w/a (fact-free) focus on crime & homelessness. Nothing on Trump’s racism or authoritarianism.

One of the most consequential things Trump is doing. Deserves as much attention as the Epstein mess. But good luck with that. He is changing the policy so that greenhouse gases cannot be regulated and climate change can’t be addressed. Trump is killing the future.

✍️ A new paper examines indoor environmental conditions across multiple prisons
