Next time somebody tries to get me to justify the existence of the humanities, I’ll just point out how for the past two Super Bowls we’ve all jumped online and engaged in collective semiotics and hermeneutics of the half-time show as text.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

Lots of regular degular, never-done-an-activism folks have been activated in recent months and are working alongside a bunch of seasoned, die-hard, been-tired-for-ten-years-or-more organizers, and you don't know all of those stories bc most people are moving with a bit of discretion in these times.

Academia is so incredibly fucked up and also a lot of the intellectual work that goes on in the academy is incredibly important

Part of what makes life in the academy tough is holding and navigating both of these truths at the same time

I know its a radical idea but maybe the human body was not made for 8-10 hours of continuous work per day. Everytime I take a break and get back to work, I surprisingly have more energy for it. Such a revelation, I know!

You don’t have to want kids or even enjoy being around them. But it’s also worth unpacking why kids simply existing, learning, or having unmet needs reads as “annoying,” “unlikeable,” or “bad behavior.”

This collective discomfort with noise, need, & vulnerability is why many ADULTS are struggling.

Can’t believe I am saying this, but Stranger Things probably gave us one of the finest finales among the hit TV shows of our generation

“Can’t believe NYC elected a Muslim as mayor.”

In truth—a Black American Christian woman swearing in a Ugandan American Muslim of South Asian ethnicity as his Syrian American wife holds the Qurans he swears in on, all while standing on the steps of a subway station—is the most NYC thing imaginable.

As I write my dissertation, I realize just how destructive the smartphone has been to the process of writing. Writing requires us to ponder, to rewrite and edit while staying with words. Everything the smartphone encourages - attention deficit and temporary dopamine hits - is antithetical to that.

Overthinking and self-critical spirals are a problem not necessarily because they are a 100% wrong but because they provide nothing useful to work on. Maybe there is a grain of truth in what you are overthinking but if it limits you from doing something about it, what’s the point of thinking.

Maurice Bloch’s blurb on Graeber’s “Toward an Anthropological Theory of Value” is truly a dream blurb. If someone tells me my writing is in “contrast with the usual self-righteous sludge we have to endure” it will truly be the highest praise. And the book does deserve this praise!
