Feels like something cracked today in the transatlantic alliance. Europeans have been swallowing their pride, bitting their tongues, and bending the knee. That strategy may have bought them time but it has now clearly failed. It also had a major cost - it has made the WH think Europe will cave. 1/

Europe has to stand up to Trump. Use the Anti-Coercion instrument. There's no other way

1/ Something which I don't think gets articulated clearly often enough is that a system where countries generally respect international sovereignty and territorial integrity is not pure charity or morality by the United States, but in its direct interests.

Despite it being the strongest bear.

Lesenswerter Thread/Artikel.

With this, it is quite clear once more that at least three of the permanent members of the security council don't care about the responsibilities that come with that position.

My take on the NATO summit. Lots of unintended consequences with Europeans agreeing to something that few intend to deliver on. NATO ignoring its major challenge, fighting together as Europe with less US. That requires deep reforms, not vague spending pledges.

Another english thread on the coalition agreement.
The German coalition treaty is in, and digesting it for EU and foreign/security policy, a couple of things stand out to me:

First, the foreign/security part no longer includes threat of Russian attack on NATO in the next five years, and is more traditional on US partnership.
Well, judging by the lines on the US and NATO in the coalition agreement, you wouldn't think that Trump 2 was the decisive factor in Merz's U-turn on the debt brake.

b) An even more profound question here whether the US dollar exorbitant privilege is waning.

Since the dollar is the world’s primary reserve currency and is widely used for global trade and as a reserve asset, demand for it is consistently high.
