thread, with emphasis on this, having spent the past month on a hair trigger myself. It’s not just because of Gaiman and the filthy feeling once again of primally influential art having been created by a predator. it’s the heartsicknesses that the rape culture default is still disbelief.
Multiple people going on for hours about their disbelief *without checking the source* a) created a tremendous amount of noise, making it difficult to figure out what was going on, and b) caused a lot of additional trauma for abuse survivors, to see people they admire jump to conclusions.

The Times, specifically, has been the subject of censure by queer rights organization for their open and manifest transphobia. This has been talked about for several years, at this point.

within a week the Allies have gone from "look i don't know if i can trust the allegations bc they come from a transphobic media outlet" to "look just bc he works for a transphobic media outlet doesn't mean he can't write good things for it" and in both cases trans women demonized for daring to speak

this was about bouie lol. everyone posting about his deactivation is conveniently ignoring how he regularly antagonized and mocked upset people instead of just blocking them. such weird and cruel behavior.
often the “discourse” on this site is just a handful of big accounts/journalists bullying some rando with 40 followers whose take was too hyperbolic while other big accounts reskeet to point, laugh, and moan about “discourse.”

The thing about all the people who’ve spent the last days hemming and hawing over the Gaiman podcast being bad is that none of them thought it was a good idea to even listen to a little bit to learn basic things before suiting up to do battle about its unreliability. It wasn’t paywalled!

If you find yourself turning away from the knowledge that Gaiman will have to be excised from the publishing world and from sff in particular, overwhelmed by the emotional and personal conflicts this could cause, you need to reexamine your values and the kind of world you want to help make.

My personal feeling is that in cases of sexual assault "I'm going to wait to see what else develops" is a fine, but if you loudly announce that what you're seeing is inadequate and not enough and should not be believed by anyone, that's not waiting to see what else develops.
