Lucy is a female leucistic cardinal that has taken up residency in my family's backyard. Unlike normal cardinals, her leucism gives her white, speckled head feathers. Often seen with her is her mate, Red, one of the biggest and brightest cardinals I have ever seen in my yard.

In an unconscionable decision, the Smithsonian Institute has decided to no longer support the Biodiversity Heritage Library from 1 Jan 2026. Please someone step up and take it over.
Foundations: please step up and take over the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL). This is an absolutely essential scanned archive of all of the old journals and books from the 1500s to about 1920. Has been indispensable for my research.

One of the weirdest aspects of homophobia in American media in the 80s and 90s is it seems to have resulted in more permissive ratings for sexual references as long as they were specifically mocking gay people. You couldn't describe specific sex acts in a PG-rated film UNLESS it was a buttsex joke.

I'm really good at ruining things for myself. Anxiety is like that. It can be hard not to self sabotage when all your mind does is tell you that things will go wrong no matter what you do.

I’ve been taking a loved one into hospital for daily radiotherapy. There’s a jigsaw in the waiting room and each day I see how it’s progressed and add a few more pieces. All these strangers working together, and each day the jigsaw nudges closer to being made whole. I find it oddly moving.
