Always curious. Filmmaker/educator/writer/fresh water and mental health advocate/seer of systems/seeker of truth and crunchy salty snacks. Incorrigible slasher.

Traitors are traiting. Clean water. Clean air, indoors and out. Music & beauty, always.
The salient point here, IMO, is when Wallace points out that in schools, both bullies and onlookers who do nothing get consequences.

Which is because of what we have learned about interrupting bully culture.

"There's a whole story to be written about the public theology of this second Trump admin — where it comes from, who has refuted it (like, say, two popes), etc.

For obvious reasons, that theology doesn't come from one source, or always reflect one specific tradition.

But it sure is a thing."
Okay so I got busy and forgot to do my whole thread on this, but a couple of things:

1. There's a whole backstory here (which @alejacorazonhm.bsky.social notes in the piece)

2. This, in particular, is fascinating, because the admin didn't have to make a theological argument here — but it did.

Ukraine continues to fight.

War is...awful.

As is the assault on democracy. Specific. Global.

Slava Ukraini. Slava rule of law. Slava equal rights for all.
Good morning to readers; Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

As Russia takes more lives, Ukraine's cemeteries are overfilling and the number of cremations is rising.

Dmytro chose to cremate his brother, fearing a burial could mean losing his brother and his home to occupation.
No place to rest: Ukraine’s burial crisis
Ukraine’s cemeteries are filling up, the number of those opting for cremation has skyrocketed. Dmytro, who cremated his brother, explains why a burial is difficult for those from occupied territory.

Death toll is, per US provided stats, now at 95 if I have it correct. With zero authorization from Congress. With zero evidence presented. 23 strikes.

And regulatory changes, eh?

You don't say.

one of the funnier aspects to the AI backlash is the fact that they're negatively polarizing much of the tech enthusiast demographic against them by making hobbyist PC building functionally unaffordable
Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.

This person's thread-response to news of Rob Reiner's death.

His memory, already a blessing.
I’m just going to tell the story. Back in 2000 I was volunteering for the Gore campaign when he came along with Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Alfre Woodard and Dule Hill to a GOTV event here in MN. He ended up sitting down across from me stuffing his envelopes.

I still hold that ethics must apply to everyone entrusted with public power and funding must uphold public trust including the sacred obligation not to abuse those powers & to keep public records of public business. We should all try to hold officials accountable for doing so, without fear or favor.

Psychopaths.
I’ve heard from immigration attorneys that clients say ICE guards lay out the WRAP device (essentially a full-body straitjacket) on the tarmac as a threat — “do what we say or you’re getting the WRAP on the whole flight.”

And they aren't the first. Among the survivors of the 2003 MSU shooting:

Jackie Matthews was 11 years old when she hid in her classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012.

[Anonymous] survived a November 2021 shooting at Oxford High School.

Any lawmaker submitting to the gun lobby is a monster.
Zoe Weissman - survivor of 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, FL

Mia Tretta - survivor of 2019 Saugus High School shooting in Santa Clarita, CA

Both are now students at Brown University in Providence, RI.
Zoe Weissman, a sophomore at Brown University, joins us to discuss the shooting on Brown's campus in Providence, Rhode Island. She was in middle school in Parkland, Florida during the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School massacre. She is now an advocate for gun control and gun violence prevention.

Beyond comprehensible.

In 2023, two students who survived the Michigan State University shooting had previously survived school shootings. One at Sandy Hook Elementary, one at Oxford High School.

Ahmed el Ahmed.

That's the guy who tackled one of the shooters at Bondi Beach.

Scrape that. Scrap turning thinking over to AI.
This is fucking grim. Somebody invented a white guy, an "IT professional" named Edward Crabtree, who stopped the Bondi shooting and spread it all over the internet, which was picked up by AI agents and slop aggregation sites.

The real hero is a fruit stand owner named Ahmed el Ahmed.

The anti-Semitic mass shooting in Australia will cause a national conversation and policy change. We know this because the 1996 Port Arthur massacre led to significant restrictions on guns.
The shooting at Brown will do nothing. We know this because it occurred on the anniversary of Sandy Hook.

Deeply disappointed to hear that the BBC has pushed out one of the most brilliant presenters in all of science communication for speaking with integrity and honor in support of human rights and dignity.
Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.
