While I was in prison, I was the food procurement clerk. It was my job to work with the first cook to design the daily food menu and then make sure the men were fed on a budget of $2.60 per person per day.

How I helped make the best Christmas prison meal, a thread.

did you know? a usb cd/dvd drive you can plug into your computer is like $25 max

a library card is free and they often have loads of DVDs

there are many free programs online for video transcoding

if u put these things together, you can have big hard drive full of movies and/or TV shows
A (quite) young movie lover said to me recently, "Not everybody can afford a DVD player," and I said "How much do you think a DVD player costs?"

He said, "I don't know, like $500?"

Those of us who advocate physical media are maybe not doing the best job of messaging.

Sam Altman: hey I made a machine that stole literally all your stuff in order to make CSAM of your child actors, sometimes it encourages people to kill themselves

Disney: Holy shit here's a billion dollars

Altman: the machine loses more than that each week but thank you. Soon it will become god.

Stop thinking of COVID as if it's an acute cold. Think of it as a neuroinvasive virus you can get every year or two that slowly degrades your brain in ways that will harm your abilities and quality of life throughout your life. (2/?)

Hate to be posting this on a holiday, but there's been renewed interest in the CIA-backed Zero Units in Afghanistan. Here's a good summary of @propublica.org's 2022 reporting on the units and just some of the civilian casualties they were responsible for:

In 2013, Whole Foods workers in Chicago staged a “Strikesgiving” walkout to demand Thanksgiving off.

A year later, they won: no more mandatory shifts, voluntary sign-ups, and double pay for those who work.

Proof that organizing works.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.
