Dr. Steven Hatfill pushed hydroxychloroquine, a treatment for malaria and some autoimmune conditions, for COVID—even though there was clear evidence (& FDA warnings) it was risky and didn’t work.

So of course, Trump admin gave him a top pandemic prep role. Choices like this put us all in danger.

🚨 Cool new project alert 🚨

WE- you, me, everyone- need to work together to get important science messages out to people.

4 artists & 3 scientists collab'd on these posters. We hope YOU will put them out in your community. Each poster comes w/info about each topic.

4 12x18 inch posters on a brick and concrete wall. The top left is pink and says funding science saves lives, written in microbes, next to a microscope. The one on the right says Biology is bigger than binaries, with a fish, a lily, and a bee. The bottom left says Protecting wildlife starts wtih you, with a bunch of adiorable woodland creatues in yellow, white and black, including an owl, fungi, a... um. weasel? salamanders, butterflies, slugs, and a rotting log. The bottom right says Will our oceans thrive or nosedive the choice is yours, with the ocean represented in a circle, half of which is dead and half of which is alive, including kelp and a mackerel

Well, we're going to need to change THAT. How about instead of breaking the ice with 'How about the weather?' trying 'How about the insanely accurate weather report that years of modeling by federal meteorologists at NOAA made possible today that saved lives?' I'm sure you can think of more...

Call out the GOOD more than the bad. Commit to companies that commit to including all Americans. Show shareholders inclusion isn't either-or but win-win.

🔥 BREAKING: Bristol Myers Squibb shareholders voted today to reject two anti-DEI proposals. One of the proposals called on BMS to "Cease DEI Efforts," and was rejected by shareholder vote 97-2 percent (1% abstained).

BMS Board supports "our culture of inclusion" and "all decisions are merit-based."

Emily Feiner was forcibly removed from GOP Rep. Mike Lawler's town hall after she asked her so-called "moderate" congressman to stand up to Donald Trump's authoritarian power grab.

There's a great pushback happening across the entire country — even in Republican held districts.

Support Courage in your university administrations in ANY way you can. A supportive email to someone WAY above your pay grade. A GoTeam! note tacked to the elevator. Let them know the faculty students alumni have their backs and cheer them on to STAND UP. #CourageIsContagious

What's happening with these grants is much more complicated and mostly unknown. None of the NIH have been officially cancelled. The NIH was just ordered to stop paying. They got the Unis to enforce silence on their own campuses because they thought they were "negotiating" and cld get the funds back.

If you’re concerned about the impact of the proposed budget on Federal funding of science but aren’t sure what to say when you call your elected officials, remember that a coalition of professional societies representing nearly 100,000 scientists signed an open letter about this a few weeks ago.

Check this chart.
Purple line: NIH actual budget (as passed by Congress) after 2000.
This is in real (inflation-adjusted) dollars.

The Trump/Vought proposal for 2026 (yellow) is catastrophic, for US science and medical cures for Americans. That's a massive drop.

Wouldn't it be something if the ~2m American research scientists crashed the site with expressions of interests in say the next week? Seems like it would send a notable message?

We will put forward a 500 million package for 2025-2027 to make Europe a magnet for researchers.

As well as ambitious proposals for R&I in the next EU budget.

We will also offer the best and brightest the right incentives to come to Europe ↓

Europe’s choice is clear.

To put science at the heart of its economy.

To become the home of scientific freedom and collaboration.

And to welcome talent from all over the world.

I’m glad to present the first elements of our Choose Europe Initiative.

First, in case this deadline is real, consider HOW to pace out & spend the funds if possible. Second, this is an opportunity to support representatives to resist this pressure. Both sides of the aisle are feeling the pushback on science cuts. Keep up the pressure FOR SCIENCE.

A heads up -- with potential action steps.
Slow-walking NIH grants is intentional. And if you don't spend your NIH grant by end of US fiscal year 9/30/25, a plan seems afoot to force a vote to impound those funds. 🧵

Amplifying this. NIH money not used by end of summer is gone.

I've had a new R01 pending for months now, the award is prepared (according to ERA commons), what steps are left before the NOGA and funds released? Feel like many grants are being slow rolled before they are then not funded.

#ScienceMayDays: What to do? Support Courage and plaintiffs in lawsuits that push back. On April 2, APHA and other researchers and union filed a lawsuit challenging the abrupt, reckless, and apparently politically-driven cancellation of research grants at NIH. Read the complaint here:

Science is definitely IN DISTRESS on Day 2 of #ScienceMayDays. Time to yell! SOS, or tap ...---... (Morse ), or hang a ⚫⬛⚫ flag, or broadcast "m'aider" (help in French) or 'mayday' 3 times in a row, because Science needs HELP! meanwhile we'll keep coming up with more things we can all do. ⚫⬛⚫

Budget released today:
40% cut to NIH
50% cut to NSF
If enacted, this will destroy academic research in the United States. It will also have a major trickle down effect on the entire academic ecosystem

🧪 What the f is going on with NSF right now??? 🚨🚨🚨

There's been so many NSF updates within the past 48 hours that it's hard to keep track.

It feels like an onslaught. It *is* an onslaught. But it's still vital to remain focused, organized, and strategic.

So here's my recap of past 48 hours...

This budget is laced with racist, anti-science, petty, and cruel language that should be beneath the president. If enacted, it would leave communities at the mercy of devastating climate impacts and deprived of public protections that save lives and support the economy.
