We're about to build a house and we've set this rule: if it can be analog, it should be. If we need some digital automation (e.g. a thermostat), it has to have a way for us to manually override it. No AI/IoT/random data getting sent out to who knows where.
Our home was never that smart and it's getting stupider by the day. Once KEXP started broadcasting locally, we got a radio for the kitchen. If it comes down to it, we have vinyl records, DVDs, and a Tempest/Centipede standup machine and a LOT of books.

It's not the tech, it's the business models.
Highly recommend everyone re-endumbify their homes, including appliances that don’t want to watch porn and lightbulbs that don’t send data to whoever and speakers that don’t listen to everything you say

Don’t put this stuff in your house. Make it clear that’s why you aren’t buying it.

so many of the small indignities of daily life come from us being denied the ability to tell a rich man in a tech company to fuck off. minesweeper has microtransactions. paid services have ads. the opt out says maybe later. the drive thru is a broken chatbot. your car is an ipad. fuck off! fuck off!

I turned 44 this week. At first, I thought about writing 44 things I’ve learned about business design. Then I realized two things:

-No one wants to read that much.
-I don’t want to write that much.

So here are 10.

I realized a part of the site was broken just by watching a single user session in Clarity. You know how long it would’ve taken me to spot that in Google Analytics? Forever. I probably never would’ve noticed.

And there are still people who dismiss qualitative research because of sample size.

Hello. I'm an autistic person in a film or television drama. I'm a man in my twenties and excel at STEM. Somehow, I managed to get a PhD without understanding basic social rules, and my coworkers find me adorable.

Any good books and/or courses on business design? Looking to bridge the gap between my MBA and design background with a focus on real business outcomes (i.e. making money), not just the typical design thinking/post-its on walls kind of content. Thanks!

In a horrifying article about the dangers of Teslas, one point stands out: Teslas automatically disengage self-driving mode <1 second before an imminent crash--not enough time for the driver to react, but enough for Tesla to deny responsibility for fatal crashes, since self-driving "wasn't engaged."

The real triumph of Silicon Valley’s techno-fascists is making the world believe there’s only one way to be rich.
Creating & becoming rich from successful business models does not require hoarding obscene amounts of wealth — and manipulating politics to get even more treasure — while others starve.
I know it’s trendy to hate billionaires, but many didn’t get rich by accident.

Jeff Bezos made goods cheaper & quickly accessible. Bill Gates put computers in homes. Sergey Brin gave the world a search engine that works. I could go on.

So yes…they should exist.

Thiel’s answer sounds exactly like something the Antichrist would say.
Peter Thiel tells an interviewer he invests in companies like Palantir and Anduril to prevent the rise of an authoritarian antichrist.

The interviewer then asks won’t these technologies just make it easier for such an authoritarian government to oppress people?

Listen to Thiel’s answer below.

I ran into a hungry cat on my morning walk, so I went to the nearest grocery store and bought him kibbles. He was so hungry he ate growling, like he thought I might take them away 🥹
