Keir Starmer's currently sat looking at some papers, the buzzing in his head is getting louder. Saying "Stop Making Mistakes" over and over as he ponders whether it was a good idea to bet the entire UK economy on magic beans.

All reminds me of how hostile the media used to get about media studies. ‘It’s just watching telly and reading newspapers’ (and also ‘potentially working out what we’re really up to’).

Lots of responses to this, so I’d point out that all of this chat makes more sense if you understand the insane aggression he’s talking about is “women accusing my friends of sexual harassment, and members of the public being angry on social media about police murdering black people”.

If your considered analysis is that everyone has gone completely mad except for you, then is it likely that’s what happened? Or is it you that is the arse here.

What strikes you as more likely? That the whole country of seventy million people has unaccountably gone insane, or that maybe two thousand people who all know each other and work together, often in the same building, have slowly roasted each others’ brains to lunacy. www.ft.com/content/c7e4...
How polarised is Britain?
Behind media perceptions of a sharpening political divide is a more complicated picture

The Arab Spring is a relevant point to pick, because it’s when all the lads joyfully hailed social media as an excellent tool* for people to organise against cruel, unjust regimes that rule by force, propaganda, patronage and inertia. And then they stopped, and had a think about what that meant.

Counter-opinion: it's a f***ing tragedy that corporate greed has broken the medium which facilitated Tahrir Square etc and is now doing its best to break the rest of the Internet.

Opinion: It would be a hugely welcome development to discover that we have not merely reached social media saturation point, but that the experience has been degraded to such an extent that it has shocked people out of their stupor.

a spokesman for BrewDog said 'this is the one thing we didn't want to happen'
an excerpt from the National article reading 'the National reported in April this year that in a bid to help keep tree saplings alive by keeping deer out BrewDog erected a perimeter fence, but instead actually trapped the animals inside'

Their strategy here is “Win over elderly reactionaries or bust”, and it’s helpful to understand that for them, “bust” means “very well-remunerated post-politics job with corporate donor” or at worst, “period in opposition, then try again with exactly the same shit”.

New post:
"Identity Crisis"
Labour keeps trying to appeal to a lost white working class vote + alienating middle-class grads / ethnic minority voters that are a much bigger part of their coalition.
Why? And how can they rebuild their coalition more effectively?
spanielapplause.bsky.social
You've put that out into the world, and that's enough

You spent seven years roaring into cameras that your own party, its members and its supporters were not only very racist, but the most deranged form of Hitlerian crackpot racists imaginable.

Voters "feel personally attached' to Farage, and labelling him racist was tarring them with the same brush, a 2024 intake MP said, comparing the moment to Hillary Clinton's infamous
"basket of deplorables" moment.

Oh Fraser, such wilful ignorance. Will Farage be sending border force into South Kensington to deport white French people or Clapham to deport white Australians do you think ?
Starmer said Farage's plan to crack down on immigration was racist - which, given that the plan is unrelated to race, is nonsense. At least, by my definition. And if he's saying that now, how will he ratchet up in a campaign?

The “immigration debate” in this country is completely fucking mental.

We’re repeatedly told that voters are concerned about migrants who “break the rules” or “don’t contribute” by people who then suggest the solution is to make life harder for those migrants who follow the rules and contribute.

“NHS wages aren’t set by market rates” - yes and that’s a problem because we lose thousands of experienced healthcare workers to other countries who pay market rates.

Only a fool would think the solution to that particular problem is to make it even less attractive for people to work for the NHS.

We can say this until we’re blue in the face and it won’t make a blind bit of difference, because this isn’t and wasn’t ever electoral calculus. Put simply: this government has total contempt for the libs, never mind the left, and it wants to represent rich reactionaries and retired racists instead.

I cannot adequately explain how incredibly bad it looks, that the police *literally raided the First Minister’s house live on national television and put a crime scene tent over her front door*, while everyone knew this idiotic bullshit was going on and actively worked to ensure its success.

I feel it’s very irresponsible and inflammatory to accept donations from extremely partisan pro-Israel billionaires to help wreck your own party, then conceal them from the authorities while booting the pro-Palestine left for antisemitism, while you facilitate the genocide of the Palestinian people.

Ok. They’ve pissed me off.

I’m back to tell you 3 things about ID cards:

1. Migrants ALREADY HAVE biometric ID cards & govts have been trying to digitise them for years w repeated fuckups & failures causing complete chaos - they don’t work, you do not want that system for you.

i have to say, as a trans journalist who has covered the "trans debate" for about a decade now, there is no daylight between how the trump administration and conservatives lie about tylenol and autism and how they've lied about youth trans care.
