Minneapolis residents chase ICE out of Cedar-Riverside. @engy5150.bsky.social took the video, @wentrogue.bsky.social identified the neighborhood

In these dark times for news media, sometimes we lose sight of why a healthy society needs journalism in the first place.

It’s good when we get notes like these to remind us.

If I had to diagnose the cause of the "Bluesky malaise" as @kleinman.bsky.social calls it, I would describe it as a lot of people without the skills or resources or interest in journalism or activism mistakenly believing that being performatively miserable all the time will net the same results.

just bought a year subscription for a friend and now I'm gonna upgrade. roth is truly a delight every time and now I'm thinking year subs for my whole extended family — especially in the midwest. heaven knows they need it.
i asked @davidjroth.bsky.social to write a "a quick 2-3 graf sub appeal" based on his typically excellent blog earlier this week. because he can only be himself, roth turned in 600 original words, trimmed down and reproduced here. if you also liked reading this, consider a sub: defector.com/products

Agents in Key Largo, Florida ripped this woman wearing medical scrubs out of her car as she screamed she is a US citizen. Agents cuffed her and put her in one of their cars.

She was eventually let go, per David Goodhue of the Miami Herald, who also took this footage:

too big. too springy. watching him in college you could tell it was an anatomical impossibility he'd be available all the time at the next level. game is too fast now. round mound of rebound would also have this issue in the modern game.
New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson will miss extended time with a right adductor injury, sources tell ESPN. He will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

I take Wikipedia for granted. Reading this Jimmy Wales interview reminded me in our Fantasyland age what a remarkable and important creation it is. True pillar of civilization. Runs on only $200 million a year. Requires our support. So I’m finally donating. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/10/18/m...

Ngl I’ve always had huge issues with university departments of education, which are often grifter hubs for the accumulation of capital to push expensive fads on to teachers, but this is abysmal even by their standards. (This is not to shade all academics who study education before you yell at me).

I make an extra pumpkin pie every Thanksgiving and stick it in the fridge first thing. Then, I gorge on it all Friday morning. The cold solidifies it and the consistency is so much better. My family is not allowed to touch this fridge one and I don't eat the hot one on Thursday.
So my pie take is there are no bad pies, but some pies have to be eaten a certain way:

1. Pecan: Always good

2. Fruit: Must be homemade. Otherwise bad.

3. Pumpkin: Best eaten cold at 7 am standing over a sink before everyone wakes up
Apple pie is bad. This is not really debatable. So is key lime pie, while we’re on the topic. Pecan pie is the 🐐 tho.

BEFORE jokic's first mvp, I was on a call w/ one of my very best friends, a professor in Boulder and huge hoop head. we concluded that he might be the greatest offensive force in nba history; never felt more prescient.

When I say that locking mothers in the suburbs with small children breaks them? This is what I mean.

It’s why we need universal daycare, paid parental leave for a full year, with gradual return to work schedules.

Babies do best in groups of peers (siblings are not peers). And adults NEED peers!
