I remember the phrase "they can't be allowed to melt back into society" re: the de-Baathification of Iraq after the war there. Like everything about that experience, the attempt was cynical, stupid, and botched. But there really should be a plan about what we do with guys like these in the future.

I did receive a scam like this last year (in the postal mail!). I called my hospital and they had no idea what it was. So I didn't pay it. It was around $200ish and it looked quite convincingly like a medical bill, but it didn't have any specifics about what it was for and didn't sound familiar.
Once again I want to say that this recent trend in US Healthcare where a random company associated with a random provider but no direct link to the in-person hospital system sends us a bill by e-mail weeks or months later with no details about the provided services is just going to cause scams.
