Since "the medium is the message," and I am familiar with the media through which Marshall McLuhan communicated (books, recorded lectures, interviews...), I can infer that I have already encountered his message, and therefore I have no need to actually read his publications.

I am about halfway through Nick Harkaway's Gnomon, and my esteem for it keeps climbing. A few of the earlier sections were kinda meh, but I'm wondering if this'll end up being my overall favorite novel by the time I'm done.

type for books used to be set using little metal letters built into words in racks and then inked and pressed on to paper. If you had stock phrases you wanted to reuse a lot you could make a cast of them called a ‘stereotype’. The sound of them *clicking* into place, in French, is ‘cliché’
