This article about proliferation of garbage ebooks on Amazon points the finger at AI--but also cheap, crappy ghostwriting companies (scams that often scam their staff by not paying them). Also the Mikkelsen twins, more or less the progenitors of this grift www.vox.com/culture/2412...
Amazon is filled with garbage ebooks. Here’s how they get made.
It’s partly AI, partly a get-rich-quick scheme, and entirely bad for confused consumers.

Fake agency alert: watch out for solicitations from Pens and Pitch Literary Agency. Lies about startup (says 2000 but domain reg less than 1 week old), crappy Wix template website, stock images/fake bios for "agents", rep claims for books that don't exist www.pensandpitchliterary.com

And about every decade some publisher puts out one of these sff romances, and it gets popular — because readers are hungry for it! — and everyone gasps and clutches their pearls because it’s a Brand New Combination!
And the Old Romancers like me sigh and mutter about the Yoots.

Nobody would have to whisper if the price of speaking out wasn’t so high

If you hate whisper networks, make it safe to speak.
TW: sex assault. I've been trying all day to figure out how to word this: be frustrated that whisper networks are needed in this society. In a just world, they'd be archaic, but to condemn them or the people using them is negating the one tool many victims of harassment and sex crimes have.

I wasn't planning to comment more about the Hugos but the discussions about the "slate" really bug me. I don't think I have seen any translations of the blogpost from Science Fiction World (the publication that put out the list), so let me try to translate it very carefully here for context.

Some Authors Were Left Out of Awards Held in China. Leaked Emails Show Why.
When some books, including best sellers, were conspicuously absent from the science fiction Hugo Awards last year, writers and fans became suspicious.

Are you ready for more? Sure, of course you are. It’s a trainwreck, no one can look away.
So in further Hugo news—yes, it just keeps going—if you put the leaked spreadsheet next to the list of nominees, it looks like pretty much nobody in the big fiction categories should even have been on the ballot. They should almost all have been Chinese authors.

My thoughts on the Hugos are wrapped up in larger thoughts about institutions & their purposes, which is that:

Institutions are not friends; they are tools by us, for the good of us. Like all such tools, they must continuously be reassessed, lest they smother that for which they were created.

I don't like "Your first draft will be shitty" as advice, because it's a really negative framing.

I prefer, "You have the freedom to be messy creating your first draft."

Anyone crafter knows what their room looks like mid-creation. Writers should be as free to be as exhuberent and messy.
