I think the only thing the bigger combat arenas are missing are big title cards just like for bosses, I feel like it would turn so many people from viewing them as just an exploration roadblock to how they see bosses.

Part of me feels like Dark Souls wouldn't have caught on if the first game had difficulty settings. It'd be "cheap", "pointless", etc.
Arcade games had a relatively granular difficulty option via credit feeding and it played a big part in them written off as "button mashers"/"quarter munchers".

In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Mario and Luigi's level-up stat gains are bizarrely based on what level Bowser is currently at. If he is at a "good" level, they will be several times more powerful. The game does not tell you which levels are good and which are bad.

Big part the phenomenon of lacking sense of committal, often associated with things like only getting a few games as a kid, or in as adult, only able to afford some. You give a thing a fair try if you onlyu get less, or there is a bigger story or motivation to staying.

i love weird devices and goofy gaming tech but i think 99% of the usecase of the 3rd party emulation handheld is the dude who sat next to me on the subway, scrolled his terabyte of games for 10 stops, watched the intro to Power Stone for the Sega Dreamcast, and then got off the train
