Classical Rhetoric student today put together that “platonic” love must have a more precise meaning and origin than its current use suggests and asked if I could clarify. I nearly did a cartwheel.

Gorgias analogizes a drug’s effect on the body to that of speech’s on the soul. Psychoanalysis retains this proximity of speech to magic, authorizing the rhetorician, announcing the analyst, and vindicating the sophist insofar as each refuse to cower before her experience.

I think we can all agree that the extended discussion of Lacan’s analysis of “The Purloined Letter” was one of the low points of last summer’s Democratic convention.

ironically the education for its own sake, Enlightenment-coded, Great Books-ass liberal arts degree is one of the better employment bets you can make. learn how to read, write, think critically, develop curiosity so you can pick up new skills quickly, etc etc
"Among college graduates ages 22 to 27, computer science and computer engineering majors are facing some of the highest unemployment rates, 6.1% and 7.5% respectively ...

That is more than double the unemployment rate among recent biology and art history graduates, which is just 3%"

When I say “technology” I mean language as such
When I say “technology” I mean the codex
it annoys me so much that nowadays when people say "technology" they mean "another website" rather than, say, the interface between steel wheel and steel rail

the tech industry (can we rename it please?) has turned everyone's brain into soup

"We are not in an era of small calculations but of great movements. Politicians with a vision and a strong, clear rhetorical appeal, like Trump, Bernie, AOC, and now Mamdani, are those who excite people."
"The approach of issue polling and then building a campaign around it completely ignores the human faculties of judgement and imagination ... Politicians need to go back to basics, to the oldest political skill: rhetoric, that is the art of combining reason with imagery that moves the emotions."
