I say a lot in my local context that "AI" is a Trojan Horse of a term -- I immediately ask folks what they mean when they use it, because it's infuriating to let the commercial, extractive, wasteful (which is everything made publicly available) smuggle itself in as "inevitable" on stolen valor.
Relatedly, today I was editing a wonderful essay for a forum I’m curating on AI in which the author expertly distinguishes between commercial GenAI and truly fantastic uses of other forms of AI for digital humanities, for an audience of not-DH people. More of that please.

One of the main ways that "gen AI" bullshit and the bullshitters attendant thereto have fucked everything for everyone is that they fully succeeded in their attempts to obfuscate and occult what "AI" means, so now people hate the very concept structure of the term, even down to its far less bad uses

A weird thing, for me, with all this AI crap is how thirsty AI users are to get the rest of us to use it, too. Why does it bother them so much if we're opposed to it and would rather not? They're SO MAD about it.
Truly a banner day for AI boosters rudely jumping into conversations, framing their arguments in a condescending and insulting way, and demanding civility from ppl who disagree.

I think the fundamental gap here is that non-creative people think that creative people make things for the end product, when in fact it’s the act of creation and not the end point that makes it worthwhile.

If there's anything AI has done for me this year, it's awakened a hunger for person-to-person connection. Hanging out with a baby, going to see live theatre, eating food someone made, appreciating art from 200 years ago, from 800 years ago, from 10,000 years ago... Human creation is so wonderful.
