It is interesting no one has any footage of the mayhem that’s engulfed Portland

I still have an account but I'm not active on it. I'll be honest, Booktok has nearly always let me down 😂 We just have fundamentally different tastes in books, lol

"the best rent control is a thirty year mortgage" is a hell of a thing to say in a ward that's majority renter.

if i could buy a house, i wouldn't need rent stabilization, LYDIA.

Some days I feel like AI people never stopped to consider the actual needs of its end users and what problems it's solving before forcing it upon all of us as the next big innovation or we're left behind. If it really was innovative, it wouldn't need the hard marketing pitch, it'd market itself

Like, I always know where the bathrooms are, what the wait times are, the app has all the menu information, and I don't have to worry about bag limits or water bottles either. And it's so closely monitored that I always feel safe there

If you want to know what Portland is like just watch Portlandia. It's pretty damn accurate. And hilarious! And that's what troops are here for. Peaceful foodie hippies who care about helping people and love the outdoors. That's why people move here too! We're just fine without the feds! /end

Every summer there's the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival. Students at the community college get to gig with pros. We have a thriving comic scene with Dark Horse and Image headquarted here. The Portland Art Museum! The planetarium at OMSI! This city is safe. The only thing making it unsafe is Trump

We have a lot of donuts. Don't just settle for Voodoo. Cathedral Park is very photogenic, I have done photoshoots there. We have socks in sandals and avocado toast. Mt. Tabor and Forest Park have amazing hikes. Witch's Castle! There are homeless camps, and some boarded up windows, that's all cities

The Portland Trump speaks of is one I don't know, and I've lived in Oregon all my life. There are cherry blossoms on the Waterfront in the spring. There are views of Mt. Hood beyond KOIN Tower on clear days. I go to the theater and the zoo. Powell's Books. Food trucks! Max gets you everywhere.

I've read 155 this year, not just you... reading is escapism! I also need more hobbies though 😂

The sad part is that these points where you feel stuck on where to go next are part of how you grow and evolve in your craft as a writer. You have to learn how to process them and then you get the dopamine hit of working through the problem. Lazy writers give up, cheat, or just think they suck.

The only correct take on a fundamentally anti-human technology.
Screenshot of David Simon interview
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

A really old trick conservatives use is to accuse liberals of supporting an idea that would make sense under liberal values but that liberals don't actually support for tactical reasons. So you face a choice of either accepting the false accusation or you argue against your own values.

Saw a CBS ghoul trying to hound Hakeem fucking Jeffries about whether “illegal aliens get the ACA subsidies” by reasking the question multiple times after Jeffries said it wasn’t true. You’d think he was interviewing a Nixon staffer about watergate.

I wish I knew the cure to resentment beyond dramatically upending your life every 3 years. Gratitude or mindfulness perhaps. Sometimes I feel like resentment is eating me away and I'm tired of it

There is one central, core truth to hold on to:

Most Americans don't actually know most of what's happening. But they still don't approve of the slice they do know about.

I usually feel overstimulated at crowded places like grocery stores, ordering from restaurant menus, comic cons, zoos, etc. But the one place I often manage to feel fine is, of all places, Disneyland. It's just so dang orderly
