“Around half of the market gains captured by the S&P 500 index have been driven by tech-related stocks, Deutsche Bank warns. A separate report by Torsten Sløk of Apollo Management concurs, noting that equity investors are "dramatically overexposed" to AI investments.” 😬

The real economy is already in a deep recession. The fake AI economy is a smokescreen. And now I'm afraid that the government will throw any amount of money at it to keep it from popping.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

A friend who works in finance opened my eyes to the fact that all of capitalism is based on the idea that raw material is free. You may have to pay for machinery to extract or process it, but not the material itself. All the way back to Locke and the “servant” whose labor accrues to the “master”.

See also this: cops are trained to think of “the public” as a threat or, at best, as unappreciative: opposition/naive. And middle- and umc white ppl think of cops as enforcers we call in against “disorder”: loud music late at night, “those crazy drivers,” vandalism, rare property theft.

🥴

I understand why people *want* the police to intervene--normies are like, 'I thought cops are supposed to arrest people doing crimes, ICE is right there doing crimes, go do your thing'

but police organizations take nearly every opportunity to be like, 'oh you misunderstood what our thing is'
jesspish.bsky.social
The Fraternal Order of Police is on the side of MAGA and against the people they are supposed to be "policing." I think this says a lot to the people who insist local police are going to be "resistance."

Or in some cases personal experiences of crime or criminals. I think it’s an inherent problem of mass communication and a complex world, that we necessarily have to use abstractions. But that can be countered by well told stories about specific people, as we know from talking to ppl about abortion
tedos.bsky.social
This is really good. The bit at the end—“a losing debate about crime”—rang a little bell for me; in the work I’ve been doing, the “criminals” frame is the one his supporters rely on. Bc “crime” and “criminals” are *abstractions* that people fill in with their own images (many based on tv or movies)

JB Pritzker and Gavin Newsom are doing something new and important: They understand Stephen Miller's theory of fascist power politics, and they've developed a theory on how to combat it. More Dems need to reckon with Miller's understanding of the moment.

New from me:

Inside Stephen Miller’s Secret Plan to Normalize Trump’s Dictator Rule
He wants to supercharge searing civil tensions to get low-information voters to embrace their inner authoritarian. Exactly two Democrats appear to fully grasp this.

In addition, the new rule allows farm employers to charge H-2A workers for their housing, which was not allowed before. "It's a way for employers to continue to house workers and also charge them, and bring down effective wages," said Marcos Lopez of the Labor and Community Center at the University of California, Davis.

What it sounds like when philosophers who are also anti-trans activists submit an amicus brief to a US court where they argue for banning trans girls and women from women's sports.

the option of interpreting the Idaho and West Virginia
statutes as motivated by the justified aim of excluding
all males from female sports, it is quite invidious to
interpret them as instead motivated by the unjustified
aim of excluding males who identify as female in par-
ticular.
Consider a simple analogy. Imagine that we are
back in Medieval Europe. Gold is the currency of the
land. Consequently, many merchants prefer to accept
gold and only gold as payment. However, a new move-
ment is afoot, whose members are known as the alche-
mists. The alchemists purport to have found a way of
turning iron pyrite (fool’s gold) into gold. Some people
are convinced by the claims of the alchemists, though
many others are not. This difference in attitudes
starts to lead to time-wasting interactions in which an
alchemist or fellow traveler tries to purchase a good
using iron pyrite from a merchant who, unmoved by
well-publicized insistence on the part of the alche-
mists that only irrational prejudice could lie behind
lingering doubts about the possibility of converting
iron pyrite into gold, continues to insist on only ac-
cepting gold as payment. One such merchant, whose
unofficial working policy has hitherto been to accept
only gold as payment, decides to make his policy offi-
cial by putting up a sign on his store saying, “Only
gold accepted (no iron pyrite!).”

Shadow President and man who keeps the mass deportation trains running on time, Stephen Miller, is just fed up with being accurately labeled a fascist and a Nazi. Do not mock his looks, or his height, or the fact that he IS A FASCIST AND A NAZI.

Good reporting on the South Shore raid from South Side weekly here.

Confirms one thing I was told but didn't put in my own piece because I didn't have a second source and it seemed too insane: border agents segregated arrested residents by race

If you encounter someone who doesn’t think this video is fighting back and worthy of some amount of praise and amplification, there is nothing that the Democrats can say or do to change their mind. They don’t care about democracy they care about destroying it.

The government is shut down because Trump and the Republicans are hellbent on taking health care away from you.

And they won’t even come to the table to talk to us about it.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.
