TOMORROW (WED): Rallies are being held across the country to protest the funding cuts to science and the illegal firing of federal workers.

Please join if you can. We need to show that many people oppose these destructive attacks on science and healthcare.

This is a very heavy day for us.

To those who lost their jobs, we are with you and will work with you again.

To those struggling to see a future for our work, do not give up.

Real change in public health has always been a battle. Now it’s a war.

We will win it.

This is our country. #RISEUP

Journalists should be discussing these power grabs in clear terms: this is an administrative coup. Elon Musk is acting outside the law to gut agencies and usurp and centralize as much power as possible in order to concentrate as much wealth as possible. This is a smash-and-grab race to autocracy.

This is what revisionist history looks like, in real time. And this also is why it might appear that archaeologists and historians have to dig deep to discover the existence of powerful women and marginalized groups -- because their legacies are so often erased.

Someone should make a database that allows you to click on a location and see in detail how Trumps cuts are hurting you directly. What medical center closed? What schools aren’t being funded? What programs are shutting down?

I sincerely don’t know why people aren’t physically stopping those dorks. Move shit. Lock doors. Lose the keys. Everyone switch seats. Turn off all the lights. Switch the signs on the elevator lobby. Make the settings all silly. Use a different language. Wear costumes. Fill rooms with balloons

From a journalist friend: Just spreading the word. The CDC is purging data, so people should archive their favorite CDC datasets today, namely ones around race/ethnic diversity, LGBTQ, and reproductive health. Also health data involving climate. The youth risk behavior survey has already gone down.

I hope people come to understand what we’re dealing with isn’t due to a lack of nuanced understanding of different approaches to addressing racism. They’re not looking for your reasonable middle ground or more compelling argument. They don’t care if you prefer a different intellectual framework.

The "diversity" thing is such a stark example of so many journalists just accepting the right-wing view as the frame for a story. It doesn't really matter what comes after that, because you've already given their view legitimacy.

good thing trump fired the entire Aviation Security Advisory Committee last week and is redirecting funds towards deportations.

unrelated, remember how hitler fired the head of airship safety for not being pro-nazi and then put in a yes man willing to cut corners and then the hindenburg blew up?

I’m trying to document how US anti-DEI actions and attacks on federal research funding are trickling into Canadian media and holy hell I knew the National Post were vile but the images they’re choosing for their articles are really something else.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.
